Powell Valley Middle School assistant principal indicted on drug charges

WISE — A Big Stone Gap assistant principal will appear for an arraignment hearing Monday in Wise County Circuit Court on drug charges.

Ricky Dale Webb, 36, an assistant principal at Powell Valley Middle School in Big Stone Gap, has been charged in a four-count indictment unsealed last Friday.

Dates of the charges range from Jan. 1, 2004, to Dec. 15, 2008. The charges include one count of conspiracy to distribute OxyContin, one count of distribution, and two counts of distributing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.

Wise County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Suzanne Kerney-Quillen said Webb is free on a $15,000 unsecured bond.

A trial date will likely be scheduled during Monday’s arraignment, she said.

Wise County School Superintendent Jeff Perry said Webb has been on administrative leave, but rules on personnel matters prevent him from discussing the situation.

Kerney-Quillen said the indictment is a result of an investigation by the Southwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force. She and Commonwealth’s Attorney Ron Elkins are prosecuting the case.

“It’s not very often that a teacher is charged with doing this, or anyone associated with a school is charged with these sorts of things,” she said Wednesday.
