Gunfire in Kingsport home leads to assault charges

February 23rd, 2009 12:00 am by Rain Smith

A Kingsport man has been arrested for allegedly firing a gun in his home, then  threatening to kill his girlfriend and himself.

According to an incident report from Kingsport Police, at 8:40 Saturday night officers were dispatched to 216 Virgil Ave., in reference to shots fired. Police observed the front door of the residence shut on their arrival, and subsequent attempts to get someone to answer the door were unsuccessful.

After several minutes a man walked from behind the residence, saying he had been inside. The man told police that the resident of the home, Leslie James Russell, 39, had been drinking and arguing with his girlfriend all day.

The witness told police that as he sat in a recliner, Russell retrieved a pistol and fired one round in his direction. Russell then threatened to kill his girlfriend and himself.

Officers forcibly entered the residence, kicking in a rear door. They arrested Russell and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault.

The pistol, two spent rounds and four unspent rounds were collected as evidence. Police say they did observe a bullet hole near the recliner.
