Area schools update peanut butter product status, more recalls, where to get information

February 2nd, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

According to the Greeneville Sun Greene County school will temporarily stop serving all peanut butter products.

The move follows the outbreak throughout the nation of salmonella illness linked to peanut butter products. The outbreak has sickened at least 500 people nationwide, including at least one person in Greene County.

None of the peanut butter products served in the schools have been recalled.

However, Brenda Freshour, school nutrition coordinator for the county school system, told the Sun, "We decided that as a precaution to not serve any peanut butter products at this time."

Kingsport's city schools have not stopped serving all peanut butter products, but according to schools spokesperson Amy Greear, "We've checked with all of our vendors and confirmed they don't have any of the recalled product. And the commodity product that we receive is not affected."

Greere said she plans to post an update on the school's web site today.

The Sullivan County schools web site nutrition page has the following notice posted, "Peanut butter used in the Sullivan County School cafeterias is not in any way associated with the recent peanut butter recall products."
