Wise County sheriff rallies effort to fight budget cuts

According to a report in the Bristol Herald-Courier Wise County Sheriff R.D. “Ronnie” Oakes is asking citizens to help to stop a state budget cuts that will cost his department four deputies.

Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman is facing the same situation - the cuts would cost his department five deputies.

According to a statewide study by the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, Gov. Kaine’s cuts would eliminate 310 deputies.

"I am asking all citizens of Wise County and the city of Norton to contact their local legislators and ask that the 7 percent reduction proposed by Gov. Kaine be restored so that we can continue to function effectively,” Oakes said in a written news statement.
