Angry parents say Sullivan County school realignment plan not worth the savings

January 27th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

According to a report by the Bristol Herald-Courier parents, students and school officials opposed to a Sullivan County school realignment plan packed Mary Hughes school's auditorium Monday night to hear more about the plan.

One element of the plan would sent Mary Hughes  middle-school students to either Bluff City or Holston middle schools. Several other county schools would see major changes and may be closed.

School officials say implementing the plan would save the county school system about $1 million, which could be used to renovate existing school buildings or build new ones.

The savings didn't impress the crowd Monday night. Many argue it's not worth the disruptions it would cause. County school board members are expected to vote on the plan during a March 2 meeting.
