According to the Knoxville News-Sentinel eight women and five men from  East Tennessee counties have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a marijuana trafficking conspiracy.

The suspects —  from various communities in Cocke, Hamblen, Grainger and Claiborne counties — were each charged with conspiracy to sell in excess of 300 pounds of marijuana and conspiracy to deliver the same amount. Most of the conspirators were also charged with other marijuana-related offenses.

According to a press release from 4th Judicial District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn the “yearlong investigation into multi-state marijuana trafficking” is expected to lead to more arrests. Details of the alleged conspiracy weren’t made public.

The 4th Judicial Drug Task Force; the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation; the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department; the Jeffrson County Sheriff’s Department; the Grainger County Sheriff’s Department, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol began the probe in January 2008, Dunn said.
