EPA investigating PCBs at Liberty Fibers site

January 5th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

According to the Morristown Citizen-Tribune, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has detected on the former Liberty Fibers site the presence of chemical compounds linked to serious human illness at the former Liberty Fibers site in Morristown.

Morristown businessman Mark Sawyer, a partner in the company that purchased the Liberty Fibers site for $2.65 million in October,  suspects that 50-year-old electrical transformers are the sources of the PCBs.

Sawyer says both EPA and Tennessee Department of Environmental officials have known about the PCBs inside the transformers for months, and have been monitoring their storage.
