KINGSPORT - Members of the Kingsport Fire Department on Wednesday pulled a man from the heat of an afternoon apartment fire on Teasel Drive.

According to Chief Craig Dye, three engines and a ladder truck were called out about 12:21 p.m. to check out a report of smoke coming from a first-floor apartment at 816 Teasel Drive, Building A.

Upon arrival, firefighters and the deputy chief quickly realized they were dealing with a working fire, Dye said.

A team of firefighters quickly entered the apartment to search for occupants and discovered a middle-aged man lying in the living room floor. The victim was unconscious when they pulled him out, Dye said. He was found in "the fire room," and had apparently suffered significant smoke inhalation.

Although the victim's exact condition was not immediately Wednesday afternoon, Dye said he's hopeful that emergency personnel's quick response gave the man a good chance at survival. "They got him out quick and got him treatment quick," Dye said. "When they pulled him out, they immediately started working on him. The paramedic just dropped his coat and airpack and started giving him advanced life support right away."

"But we don't know what the outcome is going to be," Dye added. As of about 2:30 p.m., the man was still undergoing treatment at Holston Valley Medical Center. At that time, officials were still trying to get in touch with the man's family. His identity is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The fire, confined to the living room area, was extinguished right after they got the man out. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
