Area hoops fans have plenty to see this holiday

December 23rd, 2008 12:00 am by Staff Report

As far as area high school basketball fans are concerned, Santa always delivers some of the best presents the week after Christmas.

Aside from the Arby’s Classic, there are four additional tournaments scattered throughout Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Among them is the GreenBank Ladies’ Classic, the premier girls’ tournament in the area.

Dobyns-Bennett will compete in the event, which begins Saturday at Hal Henard Gym in Greeneville — and the Tribe has drawn a tough first-round opponent.

D-B will square off with Buena High School out of California at 8:30 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs boast an all-time record of 826-129, the best overall record in California.

With Holly Holcomb, Isabel Halpern and Keani Albanez leading the way, Buena has seven players on the roster 5-foot-10 or taller, giving the Lady Bulldogs the size to challenge the Tribe’s big front line of Megan Devine, Blaine Frohlich and Juli Osborne.

Now a look at the other three tournaments taking place in the area during the coming week:
