BLOUNTVILLE — A Sullivan County grand jury on Wednesday indicted a Kingsport man who allegedly went into a neighbor’s home and shot at him from close range because the man had earlier told him to take his beer and go. The man is also accused of pointing a gun at an officer who responded to the dispute.
The indictments handed down against Roger Lynn Ward, 56, 1712 McGhee St., Kingsport, include attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
Mike Johnson, 1701 Jennifer St., reportedly told Ward he wasn’t welcome to drink beer there on May 3. Within a few minutes, Ward entered Johnson’s home uninvited and allegedly fired a .22-caliber pistol at him from two or three feet away after telling Johnson he “would drink his beer anywhere he liked.”
The bullet missed Johnson, but he sustained what police said appeared to be gunpowder burns around one eye.
Ward also allegedly pointed the pistol toward Kingsport Police Department Officer Thomas Wayt, who responded to the dispute. Wayt retreated for a moment then returned to find Ward had tossed the pistol to the floor, according to an affidavit.
The grand jury indicted a second Kingsport man on an attempted murder charge alleging he pulled a knife during a fight behind Cloud Apartments and repeatedly cut a man.
Donald S. Robinson Jr., 20, 509 Lucy Road, Kingsport, was indicted on charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault in the attack. Police said Robinson got in a fight with Jacob Richardson in the alley behind Apt. 41 about 3:30 p.m. on July 31. Robinson allegedly cut Richardson on his arms and stabbed him once in the back.
Indicted on one count of robbery apiece were Donald T. Baker, 35, 3649 Sullivan Gardens Drive, Apt. 2, Kingsport, and Adam Heath Roberts, 30, 750 Lori Circle, Greeneville.
Baker is accused of robbing the Roadrunner Market, 1312 S. John B. Dennis Hwy., on May 22. He turned himself in the next day after police released snapshots of the suspect from the surveillance footage.
Roberts allegedly mugged a man on Aug. 31 at the Riverfront Park public restrooms on Netherland Road. He’s accused of assaulting Brian Woodward and driving away with nearly $300 cash, Woodward’s credit card and a cell phone.
