Just before 5 p.m. Thursday, a Sullivan County circuit judge set a Sept. 22 trial date for a former Kingsport Police Department officer accused of conspiring to distribute over 300 pounds of marijuana in the community.

Chris Smith resigned in September 2006 to become Lime Light's security director before his arrest on two counts of official misconduct and one count of conspiracy to sell or deliver over 300 pounds of marijuana.

One of Smith's misconduct charges alleges he called former LimeLite manager James "Jimmie" Swafford Jr. to warn him he was being monitored after using his position as an officer to obtain information about the department's investigation of an alleged drug ring Swafford is accused of controlling since as early as 1998.
