ROGERSVILLE — Three teenage boys including one who was accidentally shot in the back with a stolen .45-caliber handgun Sunday have been charged with burglary and theft relating to that gun.
Miraculously, the 15-year-old boy was treated and released from the hospital for the gunshot wound to the back, although Rogersville police said the bullet has not yet been removed from the boy’s body.
Police said there were actually four boys in the car at the time of the accidental shooting Sunday in Rogers- ville around 5 p.m., but the alleged shooter, Matthew Lindsey, 18, 226 Fugate St., Rogersville, is not implicated in the burglary and theft. Police said Lindsey was sitting behind the 15-year-old boy in the car looking at the handgun when it discharged.
The bullet passed through the front seat and into the boy’s back.
Lindsey, who turned 18 on Jan. 31, was charged by Rogersville police with felony reckless endangerment and theft by possession. He has also been served a failure to appear warrant from Hawkins County Juvenile Court stemming from an unrelated case.
One of the three boys accused in the burglary and theft also just became a legal adult. Raymond House, 226 Fugate St., Rogersville, celebrated his 18th birthday on Feb. 5.
House and the other two juvenile boys are charged with aggravated burglary and theft over $1,000 in connection with an incident that was reported to the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Sunday evening at the residence of Robert Smith, 1175 Old Route 66, Rogersville.
Smith told deputies Sunday that he’d just returned home from a trip, and it appeared someone had entered his home and taken two guns and about $200 in coins.
HCSO Detective Randy Collier confirmed that the gun used in the accidental shooting had been stolen from Smith. Collier also learned that the boys had allegedly cashed in the coins at the Rogersville Food City store on Route 66.
House allegedly admitted to the detective that he received $60 for his part in the burglary.
The other two boys have been cited into Hawkins County Juvenile Court.
