Wife of Hawkins property assessor critically injured in wreck

January 29th, 2008 12:00 am by Jeff Bobo

ROGERSVILLE — Hawkins County Property Assessor Don Cinnamon’s priorities took a huge turn Monday evening after his wife, Sandra, was badly injured in a single-vehicle accident on Route 113 west of Rogersville.

Next week, voters will decide whether to re-elect Cinnamon to a third term of office, or elect one of his three challengers.

But campaigning and the election was the furthest thing from Cinnamon’s mind Tuesday evening as he sat with Sandra in the intensive care unit at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport.

Sandra Cinnamon, 67, 510 Walkers Church Road, Bulls Gap, was listed in critical condition Tuesday one day after crashing into an embankment.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Mike Moberley said Tuesday he was dispatched to the single-vehicle accident shortly before 8 p.m. Monday.

“She was driving a 2000 Nissan Altima northbound on Route 113, and from the preliminary investigation it appears that she drifted off the road to the right-hand side and then overcorrected and went head on into an embankment,” Moberley said. “It hit the embankment and came to final rest in a ditch which is part of the embankment.”

Sandra Cinnamon was alone in the car at the time of the accident. A Wings Air Rescue helicopter transported her to HVMC.

Hawkins County Central Dispatch reported that Sandra Cinnamon’s condition was so serious paramedics were performing CPR on her prior to the arrival of the helicopter.

The vehicle’s airbag deployed in the accident, and Moberley reported she’d suffered severe head and facial injuries.

Moberley said he has been unable in his preliminary investigation to determine if Sandra Cinnamon was wearing a seat belt because she was removed from the vehicle by rescuers by the time he arrived.

Don Cinnamon said his daughters were flying in from Texas Tuesday evening to join him at his wife’s side. He said his wife has been sedated, and he hasn’t communicated with her since the accident.

“I ask that people keep my wife in their prayers,” Cinnamon said.
