Bristol man, 72, accused of threatening rival in Arby's parking lot

A 72-year-old Bristol man has been indicted on charges alleging he brandished a handgun and threatened to kill a man outside an Arby's restaurant.

A Sullivan County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Douglas R. Holmes, of 101 Little Valley Dr., Bristol, on charges stemming from an alleged assault on the husband of a woman he'd allegedly been having an affair with, on and off, for over a decade. He is charged with aggravated assault, going armed and reckless endangerment.

He's accused of threatening to kill David Wayne Minnick on Aug. 23 after Minnick parked his motorcycle behind his truck in the parking lot and attempted to talk to him about the alleged affair.

Minnick told police he parked his bike behind Holmes' truck at the Arby's on Volunteer Parkway after recognizing the man his wife, Tamela Minnick, was talking to as Holmes. He told police he knew Holmes and his wife had occasionally been lovers over the past 15 years, Det. Brad Tate said in an affidavit filed in Bristol general sessions court on Aug. 27.

Minnick told investigators he walked up to the driver's side of Holmes truck and told Holmes he was "glad everyone was here so they could come to an understanding," according to the affidavit.

Holmes allegedly responded by pulling out a dark-colored revolver and "waving it around." He then said, "Move your bike or I'll shoot you!" the affidavit says.

Before Minnick could move his motorcycle and leave, two witnesses told police they heard Holmes say, "I'll blow your (expletive) brains out!" The witnesses said they didn't see a gun.

Minnick's wife was standing near the driver side mirror during the altercation, according to the affidavit.

Holmes was released on $2,500 bond on condition of no contact with the Minnicks.
