KINGSPORT — If a man accused of killing a Murphy’s Auto Sales employee last week wants out of jail anytime soon, he’ll now have to post twice the $500,000 amount originally set for his bond.

Murder suspect Harvey Bowman, 34, of 477 Gravely Road, will now have to post a $1 million bond to be freed from the Sullivan County Detention Center, according to Kingsport General Sessions Court records.

Bowman is accused of killing Wayland Manis, 67, last Thursday. Bowman allegedly shot Manis with a stolen .40-caliber handgun then stole a car from the Lynn Garden Drive auto sales lot.

The teal-colored 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier was recovered less than eight miles away, where it apparently ran out of gas across from Kay’s Uniforms on East Stone Drive.

Bowman’s case has been bound over to criminal court in Blountville and will be heard by a Sullivan County grand jury before going to trial, according to a Kingsport sessions clerk.

Bowman’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 22.

Bowman’s brother, James “Jamie” Bowman, 27, same address, also faces charges stemming from his alleged role in stealing the Cavalier. Investigators believe he drove his brother to the car lot then picked him up later on Stone Drive. He remains free on $15,000 bond.
