BRISTOL, Tenn. — Columbia’s Big Three were solid, but Archbishop Carroll’s Dynamic Duo carried the Lions into the championship game of the 25th annual Arby’s Classic.
Kris Joseph and Rodney McGruder combined to score 34 points and pull down 16 rebounds, helping Archbishop Carroll to a 43-28 win over Columbia in Saturday’s first semifinal game.
The contest was tied at the half and remained close throughout, but the Lions made just enough plays down the stretch to earn the victory.
Columbia’s three Division I prospects did their best to keep the Eagles in the game. Travis Leslie had 13 points and six rebounds, Darius Morrow scored 12 points to go with eight boards and Kenny Mitchell chipped in 10 points.
Archbishop Carroll advances to play Briarcrest in the championship game Monday night at 7 o’clock while Columbia will battle Urspring, Germany, in the third- place game.
Briarcrest punched its ticket to the championship by knocking off Urspring 52-44 in the other semifinal. Leslie McDonald scored 23 points and Elgin Lee added 17 to help the Saints reach the title game.
Christian Standhardinger and Frank Wiseler each had nine points to pace Urspring, the first international team to make the semifinals in tournament history.
Pine Crest 55, Science Hill 45
BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Hilltoppers were unable to solve the Eagles’ zone and bowed out of the tournament as a result.
Science Hill made just 4 of 18 attempts from 3-point range, turned over the ball 18 times and never recovered after being outscored 11-3 in the second quarter.
Korey Pugh led Pine Crest with 14 points while Eddie Piccinini scored 13 and Peter Connole added 10.
Detric Hancock scored 11 points for Science Hill, with 10 of them coming in the first quarter.
Father Henry Carr 58, Charlotte 43
BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Crusaders built a double-digit lead in the first half and maintained it the rest of the way to beat the Tarpons.
Father Henry Carr was able to win despite committing 29 turnovers and allowing Rodel Grenaway to bust loose with 32 points and 11 steals.
Dego Pena scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Crusaders while Ted Obute added nine points and six boards.
Father Henry Carr will face Pine Crest on Monday at 3 p.m. in the fifth-place game.
Dorsey 59, Iolani 54
BRISTOL, Tenn. — Nigel Carter scored 25 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Dons past the Raiders.
Carter went 11-of-12 from the floor and and helped Dorsey claim a 28-17 rebounding advantage.
Taylor Mounts led the Raiders with 14 points while Pablo Warner added 11. Dorsey will play Dobyns-Bennett on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the sixth-place game.
