Roundup: Gate City crushes John Battle

BRISTOL, Va. — Gate City ran wild over John Battle on Friday night.


The Blue Devils rolled up an impressive 403 rushing yards in a 41-3 win over John Battle.


Gate City (4-2, 2-3 Clinch Mountain) now has won three straight after a 1-2 start to the season.


Tyler Parks had the lion’s share of that big rushing total, compiling 154 yards on just 11 carries.


Tihlee Anderson ran for 84 yards, and scored a touchdown on three of his seven carries. Anderson made it to the end zone on runs of 1, 22 and 33 yards.


Dustin Jones’ 69-yard kickoff return and Joseph Vaughn’s 9-yard run closed scoring for the Blue Devils.


Cody Callaway completed 11 of 29 passes for 152 yards with two interceptions for Battle (1-5, 0-2).


J.I. Burton 55, Pound 14


NORTON — The high-octane Raider offense exploded for 30 points in the first period and never looked back in a Lonesome Pine District rout of Pound.


Burton (6-0, 4-0) led 49-0 at the half.


Jaymil Sensabaugh, Martinez Miles and Devin Talley each scored two touchdowns for the Raiders. Sensabaugh found the end zone on runs of 33 and 25 yards, while Miles had TD runs of 16 and 5 yards. Talley had a 70-yard run to account for Burton’s final touchdown. He also returned an interception 69 yards to account for the Raiders’ last score in the first half.


Jay Coleman had a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown and Josh Miles had a 10-yard TD run for Burton.


Chris Hughes led the Wildcats (0-6, 0-3) with 101 rushing yards, including an 18-yard score.


Powell Valley 46, Thomas Walker 13


BIG STONE GAP — The Vikings built a 27-7 halftime lead and cruised to an impressive non-district win over the Pioneers.


Myron Pinkston ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns, including a 64-yarder, on eight carries for Powell Valley (3-3). His brother, Malcom, scored on a 5-yard run. Jordan Martin added 76 yards rushing and a TD on four carries, while Cedric Mitchell scored on a 17-yard jaunt and an 86-yard kickoff return.


Brandon Addison got the Vikings defense in on the scoring when he returned an interception 34 yards to paydirt.


Zach Hensley was the lone bright spot for Thomas Walker (2-4), toting the ball 19 times for 104 yards and a TD.


Tennessee High 17, Sullivan North 6


KINGSPORT — The Vikings’ defense held the Golden Raiders to 124 yards of offense to stay unbeaten in the Mountain Lakes Conference.


Mason Canty and Matt Pendleton ran in TDs in the second quarter and Ben Perrin kicked a field goal in the opening period to account for all of Tennessee High’s scoring.


Xavier King ran for 54 yards to lead the Vikings (5-1, 3-0).


Dustin Doran had a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter for North (2-4, 1-2) to prevent a shutout.


Greeneville 17, Volunteer 7


GREENEVILLE — Three turnovers by the Falcons in the fourth quarter generated 10 game-deciding points for Greeneville in a Five Rivers Conference battle.


Volunteer (2-4, 1-2) gave it away on two interceptions and a fumble. The Greene Devils (4-2, 2-1) capitalized, breaking a 7-all tie on Chad Castainca’s 30-yard field goal. Then Jeremy Barmer made it a two-score game with a 25-yard touchdown run.


Barmer finished with 180 rushing yards on 21 carries.


Shane Barlow accounted for Volunteer’s points on a 3-yard touchdown run. Falcons QB Keith Cradic completed 13 of 23 passes for 114 yards.


Bearden 21, Science Hill 7


KNOXVILLE — The Bulldogs dominated the line of scrimmage to hand the Hilltoppers their first Big East Conference loss of the season.


Bearden (6-1, 3-0) held Science Hill to just 66 yards of total offense, while gaining 408. The Bulldogs also recorded 25 first downs, dwarfing the Hilltoppers’ four.


Zach Jordan’s 51-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second period was the lone highlight for Science Hill (3-3, 1-1).


Johnson County 17, Unicoi County 0


MOUNTAIN CITY — The Longhorns held Unicoi to 108 yards of total offense en route to a key Mountain Lakes victory.


A pair of rushing touchdowns from Tyler Leonard in the second period set the tone for Johnson County (4-2, 2-1). Christian Prudhomme added a 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to produce the final margin.


The Blue Devils (2-4, 0-3) finished with zero passing yards.


East 20, Elizabethton 14


BLUFF CITY — Caleb Looney ran for three touchdowns to lead the Patriots past the Cyclones in Mountain Lakes action.


Looney had 125 yards on 18 carries for Sullivan East (5-1, 2-1), while Tyler Gaby finished with 162 yards rushing on just 12 carries.


Cody Forbes scored on a four-yard run for Elizabethton (2-4, 1-2). Julian Smith hauled in a 33-yard TD pass from Ryan Thomas for the Cyclone’s final points.


Boone 34, Cocke County 14


GRAY — The Trailblazers compiled 387 yards of total offense and Mitch Masters scored three touchdowns to help Boone (4-2, 2-1) down the Fighting Cocks in Five Rivers action.


Cody Powell and Spenser White added TDs for the Trailblazers.


Cocke County (1-5, 1-2) fought back late in the game, with Lee Adams returning a 52-yard fumble in the fourth, but it was too little too late.

Mountain Empire 60, Shenandoah 26


CLEVELAND — The Mountaineers exploded for 30 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Lions in this Tennessee Athletic Association of Christian Schools matchup.


Mark Wynegar led top-ranked Mountain Empire (6-0) with 218 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 15 carries. Bryce Ramey added 125 yards and a touchdown.


Michael Adams led Shenandoah Baptist (5-2) with 191 yards on the ground and a pair of TDs.
