Powell Valley 14, Lebanon 9
BIG STONE GAP — Powell Valley controlled the line of scrimmage against Lebanon on Friday night.
It resulted in a 14-9 victory for the Vikings in a defensive-minded, non-district contest.
First-half touchdowns from Terrell Turner and Cedric Mitchell were enough for Powell Valley (2-0).
Vikings running back Myron Pinkston was a workhorse, grinding out 165 yards on 15 carries.
Skylar Musick rushed 22 times for 80 yards to lead the Pioneers (1-1).
A goal-line stop from Powell Valley in the first period proved the spark.
Burton 51, Appalachia 8
NORTON — The Raiders jumped out to a 43-0 lead at the half before pulling their starters in a lopsided win over the Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1) in Lonesome Pine District play.
Jaycob Coleman ran for two touchdowns and caught another to lead Burton (2-0, 1-0 LPD) with 106 all-purpose yards. Ethan Stewart passed for 139 yards and a TD, while Josh Miles ran for two touchdowns.
Mason Stewart scored Appalachia’s only touchdown on a 5-yard run.
Castlewood 42, T. Walker 0
CASTLEWOOD — Ryan Phillips gained 110 yards on 18 carries, recovered a fumble and had 12 tackles to lead the Blue Devils to a Cumberland District win.
Eleven of Phillips’ tackles were for no gain or a loss.
Shane McCall added 132 yards on 13 carries for Castlewood (1-1, 1-0) and had 8Â½ tackles on defense.
Cody Lawson, Brad Robinson and Casey Phillips had fumble recoveries for the Devils with Eric Maxfield intercepting a pass.
Thomas Walker (0-2, 0-1) was held to 6 yards of total offense.
Holston 40, Twin Springs 14
NICKELSVILLE — Aaron Reynolds rushed seven times for 185 yards and three touchdowns as the Cavaliers upended the Titans in non-district action.
Reynolds scored on runs of 72, 49 and 72 yards.
With Holston (2-0) leading 7-6 in the third quarter, Will Necessary broke free on a 73-yard kickoff return and the Cavs went on to score 33 straight points.
Daniel Smith led Twin Springs (0-2) with 101 yards on 17 carries while David Akers added 82 yards on 10 rushes.
Clintwood 30, Haysi 7
CLINTWOOD — Chris Robinson ran for three touchdowns, including a 73-yard jaunt, to guide the Green Wave past the Tigers in non-district action.
Robinson finished with 148 yards on the ground.
Derek Robbins added a 37-yard field goal and a 29-yard TD for Clintwood (2-0), while Heath Counts completed his first 10 passes of the game. Ryan Lyle grabbed two picks on defense.
Joe Yates hauled in a 13-yard TD pass in the fourth period to help Haysi avoid the shutout.
Kelly 46, Pound 14
WISE — Devan Sproles rushed for 58 yards on nine carries and scored three touchdowns in the Indians’ LPD win over the Wildcats.
Sproles scored on runs of 16 and 20 yards and caught a 16-yard TD pass from Matt Dotson.
Dotson also connected with Zac Clifton for a 27-yard TD with as Kelly (2-0, 1-0) gained 252 yards of total offense.
Jeremy Gilliam added a 61-yard TD scamper for the Indians.
Chris Hughes and Adam Balthis scored for Pound (0-2, 0-1).
VHS 37, Battle 7
BRISTOL, Va. — The Bearcats jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back as they downed the Trojans in Clinch Mountain District play.
Ethan Williams kicked a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter, and Dustin Williams added a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown to give Virginia High (2-0, 1-0) all the points needed.
Max Katelouzos threw for one TD and ran for another for VHS.
Jeffery Scott scored for Battle (0-2, 0-1).
Coeburn 35, Ervinton 29
COEBURN — The Blue Knights came back from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat the Rebels in Cumberland play.
Shane Bright carried the ball 31 times for 171 yards and three scores to pace Coeburn (1-1, 1-0), while Tra Nixon caught four passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
James Kiser returned a kickoff for a TD and ran for two more scores to lead Ervinton (0-2, 0-1).
St. Paul 35, Twin Valley 14
PILGRIMS KNOB, Va. — Josh Brooks scored three touchdowns at the Deacons rolled to a non-district win over the Panthers.
Brooks scored on runs of 9 and 36 yards and caught a 20-yard TD pass from Jared Turner. Tyler Phillips added a 1-yard scoring run for St. Paul (1-1) and threw a 74-yard scoring strike to Corey Ellis.
Jorey Rife scored both TDs for Twin Valley (0-2).
Boone 28, South Greene 7
GREENEVILLE — Spenser White threw three touchdown passes to help the Trailblazers post a convincing win over the Rebels on the road.
Thomas Karczmarczyk hauled in touchdown passes of 19 and 12 yards for Daniel Boone (1-0), while Cody Powell had a 20-yard TD reception. Mitch Masters added a 12-yard scoring run in the win.
Science Hill 28, Elizabethton 7
JOHNSON CITY — The Hilltoppers scored 14 points in the first quarter on their way to a non-conference win over the Cyclones.
Solomon Duannah ran for two touchdowns for Science Hill (1-1). Ashlon Adams added an 8-yard TD run and hauled in a 39-yard pass for a score.
Ryan Thomas tallied the only touchdown for Elizabethton (1-1) on a 48-yard scamper.
CAK 42, Cherokee 21
ROGERSVILLE — Chris Cates completed 21 of 33 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns as Christian Academy of Knoxville (2-0) dumped the Chiefs in non-conference action.
Keenan Kolinsky rushed 16 times for 127 yards and another three TDs for CAK.
Landon House scored on runs of 16 and nine yards for Cherokee (1-1). Michael Godsey added a 4-yard TD run for the Chiefs.
Unicoi 8, Happy Valley 5
ELIZABETHTON — Logan Edwards’ 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter proved to be the clincher as the Blue Devils downed the Warriors in a defensive struggle.
Leading 8-2 late in the contest, Unicoi County took a safety that narrowed the score.
