KINGSPORT — Investigators were still looking into the cause of a fire Sunday evening which gutted a Kingsport home leaving a mother of two and her fiance homeless.

The Kingsport Fire Department was dispatched to 702 Riverside Ave., shortly before 6 p.m. where they found the front half of the residence fully involved in flames. No one was home when the fire started.

Crystal Turner, who’d only lived in the house for about a month with her two small sons and fiance, was two blocks away visiting her aunt when the fire started. She said the landlord called to tell her her home was burning.

“I have no idea how it could have started,” said Turner, who was visibly very upset. “We’ve lost everything.”

The American Red Cross was expected to arrive on the scene Sunday evening to provide the family with assistance finding shelter for the night.

KFD Capt. Mike Roeske said from the scene the cause of the fire was not immediately apparent. He said the building was a total loss, however.

“It’s pretty much destroyed the whole house inside, all the contents,” Roeske said. “We’ve got one of our investigators coming to check it out, and right now we don’t have a clue what started it.”

Inspectors began their preliminary investigation once the fire was extinguished around 7:30 p.m., and were expected to continue their investigation this morning.
