Colonial Heights Middle School principal suspended in connection with DUI charge

August 9th, 2007 12:00 am by CHRISTAN M. THOMAS

William Cline, the principal of Colonial Heights Middle School, has been suspended for five days after being charged with DUI.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol filed charges against Cline on July 31. Charges included DUI, violation of implied consent, open container and violation of light law.

Sullivan County Board of Education Attorney Pat Hull said after meeting with the school system administration, Cline had been suspended for five days without pay. The suspension began Wednesday.

"Action has been taken," Hull said. "It came to the attention of the administration and, basically what they have done is sat down and come to an understanding with him that he would be suspended for five days without pay. He would be basically on notice that any other problems would lead to more discipline, potentially even termination. He has, of course, the suspension and a letter of reprimand in his file."

Hull said he was unaware of any set disciplinary schedule for employees, but decisions on disciplinary action are made on a case by case basis.

"Generally, they would be looking at for a first time (offense), if it’s a serious thing, would be a five-day suspension, but that’s not carved in stone," Hull said.
