Bristol woman faces 15 counts of animal cruelty for care of horses in Blountville

A Bristol woman is charged with 15 counts of animal cruelty after an investigation into complaints about the condition of 15 horses owned by the woman.

Karen L. Harlan, 47, of 825 Wilson Avenue, Bristol, Tenn. is being held in the Sullivan County Detention Center pending arraignment Thursday.

A joint investigation by Sullivan County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Officers and a University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Agent followed the deteriorating condition of the horses for approximately 2 months, until Animal Control officers felt it was necessary to seize them.

The charges were placed against Harlan on Tuesday and deputies arrested her Wednesday.

Horse Haven of Tennessee, a Knoxville-based non-profit equine humane organization, reportedly has assisted with care of the horses, which currently remain on the Blountville property leased by Harlan, according to Sullivan County spokesman Captain Keith Elton.
