Hawkins man accused of having sex with 13-year-old girl

DANIEL M. JOHNSON

CHURCH HILL — A 31-year-old Church Hill man will be prosecuted in Scott County, Va., for allegedly taking a 13-year-old runaway from Church Hill over the state line to have sex.

The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office on Monday charged Daniel M. Johnson, 145 Leland Lane, with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after police found the girl at Wal-Mart, four days after she failed to return home from school. Johnson and the girl allegedly both admitted that they’d had sex in Scott County.

The girl’s mother, who apparently was a friend of Johnson, called police on May 17 to report the girl missing when she didn’t come home from school.

Police obtained the address of a couple of potential places in Scott County where Johnson and the girl might be.

But before those addresses could be checked, Johnson went home in Church Hill on Monday, and he was arrested there.

The girl was arrested in Kingsport at Wal-Mart and was cited into Hawkins County Juvenile Court as a runaway.

HCSO Detective Randy Collier stated in the arrest warrant that Johnson gave a written statement acknowledging that “he had sexual relations with the 13-year-old missing juvenile.”

The charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor is being prosecuted in Hawkins County Juvenile Court.

On Wednesday, Johnson waived extradition to Virginia. As of Friday evening, he remained lodged in the Hawkins County Jail without bond.
