While the Kingsport Farmer's Market has its seasonal grand opening Saturday, more than a dozen local vendors were gathered in the Shelby Street parking lot Wednesday morning for the market's unofficial first day.
With a quick stroll between the tables and tents, you hear two subjects in the forefront of farmers' minds: an April freeze that damaged crops and high gas prices taking a toll across the board.
While you can't call the market's offerings slim pickens -- with lettuce, onions and radishes on nearly every table -- the consensus view is we're about a month away from having an abundance of locally grown peas, tomatoes, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and fruits.

All farmer's report losing money due to the high price of fuel. Citing transportation costs, they say the price of everything from fertilizer to seeds have doubled in the past two years.
The Kingsport Farmer's Market celebrates its grand opening Saturday, and will be open every Wednesday and Saturday morning through October.
