According to Capt. Jack Davidson of the Washington County Sheriff's Office, a second suspect in a Glade Spring home invasion and shooting has been arrested.
Phillip D. Buttry, 16, of Marion, Va. was apprehended without incident by the Smyth County Sheriff's Office Thursday night. Police believe he was one of two teens who kicked in the door of Douglas E. Mason's Glade Spring home and shot him in a robbery attempt.
Mason, 33, is in critical condition at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Buttry is charged with attempted capital murder, burglary, attempted robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and conspiracy. Another suspect in the shooting, Dustin Eric Trotter, 17, last listed address in Galax, Va., is still at large.
Earlier Thursday, police arrested a Jonesborough man they believe drove the getaway car. Brandon Matthew Barker, 20, is charged with capital murder, attempted armed robbery, burglary and conspiracy. He is held at Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon.
Davidson says the suspects had a prior relationship with Mason, but did not know to what extent.
Police say that shortly after midnight Monday, two juveniles burst through Mason's door, each brandishing handguns. A scuffle ensued and both juveniles shot Mason, leaving severe injuries to his abdomen and thigh. The suspects then fled the residence without any money or items being taken, presumably with Barker driving.
