KINGSPORT - Two nursing homes have planned activities to celebrate National Nursing Home Week, May 13-19.

The American Health Care Association established the weeklong celebration in 1967. The theme for this 40th year is "Treasure Our Elders."

SunBridge Hillside, 2641 Memorial Blvd., will kick off its celebration today with a daylong series of events.

Kingsport Mayor Dennis Phillips will issue a signed proclamation designating May 13-19 as National Nursing Home Week in Kingsport.

State Rep. Nathan Vaughn will present SunBridge Hillside with a flag that flew over the State Capitol. ROTC members and the American Legion honor guard will present the flags and hold a 21-gun salute.

A celebrity wheelchair race will be held at 10:30 a.m. Beginning at 2 p.m., local agencies will offer special presentations. The Kingsport Police Department's talking car, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department's K-9 unit and Horse Patrol, and the Kingsport Fire Department all will be featured.

Asbury Place Kingsport, 100 Netherland Lane, kicked off its observance of the national celebration Sunday, with families bringing their loved ones' favorite desserts.

Today is Crazy Hat Day and will feature the start of the treasure hunt. Tuesday will be Pancake Breakfast and Pajamas Day. On Wednesday, "Treasures From Our Past," a car show, will be held, and Moon Pies and RC Cola will be served. Thursday is Cinema Day with the screening of classic movies along with snacks of popcorn and nachos.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Asbury Place Kingsport will offer health screenings, games, vendors, prizes, a teddy bear fair, Beach Hut, and a pet adoption drive by the Humane Society of Greater Sullivan County.
