Tech, Tech share ACC golf crown

April 22nd, 2007 10:03 pm by Associated Press

NEW LONDON, N.C. - Virginia Tech rallied over the final 18 holes Sunday to tie Georgia Tech for the team title at the Atlantic Coast Conference men's golf championships.

The Hokies - still reeling from Monday's shooting deaths of 32 students and teachers on the Blacksburg, Va., campus - were five strokes behind entering the final round, but came back to lead by one stroke with one hole remaining.

But Yellow Jackets sophomore Cameron Tringale made a 2-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole to tie the score. The two Techs finished at 10-under-par 854 on the 7,100-yard Old North State Club course.

"Winning was secondary this week; competing was first," said Virginia Tech coach Jay Hardwick, whose Hokies won their first ACC title.

"I was proud that my guys had the guts to tee it up. It gave them a chance to heal within themselves. ... It's special to take (the trophy) back to Blacksburg because of everything everybody's been through."

Florida State junior Jonas Blixt tied the tournament record with a 7-under 65 and won his first ACC individual title.
