ECD now accepting applications for grants for counties switching to biodiesel fuels

April 5th, 2007 6:09 am by Staff report

The federal government is handing out money to help fuel the push toward biodiesel.

The Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development's Energy Division is accepting applications for federal grant funding for Tennessee counties making the switch to biodiesel in school buses, maintenance vehicles, heavy equipment and any vehicle now powered by diesel fuel.

Counties are eligible for up to $12,000 in funding for biodiesel fuel tanks and pumping equipment.

According to the ECD's Energy Division, biodiesel fuel can readily be used in existing diesel-powered vehicles with no added cost to those vehicles.

"This fuel burns much cleaner than regular diesel which benefits the local environment and especially those school children riding in biodiesel-powered buses," according to the Energy Division.

Counties receiving grant funding are not expected to purchase new tanks and pumping systems if they have existing systems that could be converted.
