Voter registration deadline April 15 for city elections

March 31st, 2007 1:21 am by J. H. Osborne

BLOUNTVILLE - Residents of Kingsport, Bristol, Tenn., and Bluff City who are not already registered to vote have two weeks left to register if they want to vote in city elections in May.

All three cities will hold municipal elections May 15, including school board members in Kingsport and Bristol.

Mailed voter registrations must be postmarked by April 15 in order for the new voter to be eligible to vote May 15, Frye said.

But that's a Sunday, Frye said, so unless you know of a post office in our area that is open on Sundays, you should consider April 14 the deadline for a postmark for mailed registrations.

Voters need to be registered in the county they live in, Frye said - which sometimes causes confusion among some residents of Kingsport, the boundaries of which extend into Hawkins County.

Frye said residents who have moved within Kingsport, but cross from Sullivan County to Hawkins County, or vice versa, must change their voter registration.

Anyone who is registered in Sullivan County can do an address change within Sullivan County until five days before the election. If they don't make that deadline, they'll have to go through the process on Election Day - and that can be time consuming, Frye said.

Seven days prior to the election is the deadline for requesting an application for absentee ballot - and the completed application must be returned to the Election Commission no later than five days before the election. Absentee ballots must be returned by mail only (no deliveries by hand) and must be received by the Election Commission by close of polls on Election Day.

Early voting will begin at the Sullivan County Election Commission Office in Blountville on April 25 and continues through May 10, Frye said. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.

Early voting will begin at satellite locations on May 4 and continue through May 10, with the same hours as above.

Early voting locations are:

•Sullivan County Election Commission Office, 3258 Highway 126, Suite 103, Blountville.

•Kingsport Civic Auditorium, 1550 Fort Henry Drive, Kingsport.

•YWCA, 106 State St., Bristol, Tenn.

Eligibility requirements for registering to vote include being 18 years old or older on Election Day and having no felony convictions.

Two forms of identification must be presented to register.

Registration forms are available at the Election Commission Offices and various other locations, including:

•Public libraries.

•Department of Safety/Motor Vehicle Division.

•Local Armed Forces recruiting offices.

•Health and Human Services offices.

•Post offices.
