ABINGDON - Virginia Tech's Southwest Center in Abingdon will host a one-day workshop, "Helping Others Cope with Grief: Therapeutic Interventions Following Loss," at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon on May 18 from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
This workshop is intended to provide counselors, social workers, psychologists, human service workers, nurses, clergy, teachers and other helping professionals an overview and understanding of death, grief and loss responses. Components of the workshop will include how to work with diverse populations including adults, children and adolescents.
Dr. Alan Forrest will employ instructive and experiential methods to provide participants with the opportunity to examine therapeutic counseling approaches with grieving individuals and to look more closely at personal loss experiences.
This workshop will focus on the developmental perspective of death, loss and grief, attitudes toward death, clinical assessment of grief, therapeutic interventions, counseling models, counselor concerns and introspection.
Workshop objectives include providing models of loss and grief as related to working with individuals, helping participants gain a greater understanding of the grief process, and training how to effectively identify and assess grief. Participants will also increase their ability to provide effective therapeutic interventions to individuals and families experiencing a death, loss and grief response, learn clinical applications of counseling strategies and treatment approaches, and become aware of self-care concerns when working with grieving individuals.
