BIG STONE GAP - The Wise County grand jury has returned indictments on nine counts against a former Powell Valley High School teacher's aide charging her with taking indecent liberties with a minor while in a supervisory role.
Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney Ron Elkins announced Wednesday the indictments against Darlene Blagg, 36, of Big Stone Gap. Elkins said Wise County Sheriff's Department investigators became involved last week when a mother reported there appeared to be several inappropriate text messages sent to her teenage son.
Blagg allegedly sent the text messages. Sheriff's Investigator Tim Wagner alleges that Blagg and the student were engaged in an intimate sexual relationship at a time when the student was a juvenile at PVHS.
Elkins said Wagner interviewed Blagg, and the teacher's aide admitted to the sexual relationship.
Elkins said before county law enforcement officials became involved, Wise County school division personnel investigated the allegations, "and as a result of that investigation, the teacher's aide is no longer employed at the school."
Evidence was presented to the grand jury alleging that Blagg took indecent liberties with a juvenile while being in a supervisory role, Elkins said.
The grand jury returned a true bill on nine felony counts. Each count carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison.
"The sheriff's office investigators did a find job with this case," said Elkins. "I especially would like to express my gratitude to Investigator Wagner for all the long hours he spent on this investigation."
Elkins and members of the sheriff's department have scheduled a press conference about the matter at 2 p.m. today at the Wise County Courthouse.
