TEST FILE - Rep. Davis tours Roosevelt Elementary School

THIS IS A TEST FILE, THIS IS A TEST FILE -- KINGSPORT - Last week U.S. Rep. David Davis spent time in Greeneville listening to educators and businesspeople make suggestions for the No Child Left Behind Act. This week he got a closer look at those it affects each day.

Davis visited Roosevelt Elementary School Monday, taking a tour guided by Principal Dwain Arnold and stopping to chat with coordinators in math and reading programs.

Roosevelt was named a targeted school under NCLB but has since made a major turnaround. The school recently won an Award for Excellence in Education Programs from the Tennessee School Boards Association board of directors for its Saturday Math Blast program.

Kingsport Board of Education member Wally Boyd said Davis initiated the visit.

"We were in Washington in his (Davis') office and told him about this story (of Roosevelt), and he said ‘I would like to come visit there,' " Boyd said. "And I said, ‘Consider it done.'

"We (Kingsport City Schools) had two instances where we had targeted schools - here (at Roosevelt) and at Dobyns-Bennett. And we felt like this (school) was really a success ... really top-notch."

In addition to representing Tennessee's 1st District in the U.S. House of Representatives, Davis serves on the Education and Labor Committee, which is working on the reauthorization of the NCLB Act this year.

During his tour of Roosevelt, Davis spent extra time in Roosevelt's Math Resource and Instructional Reading Rooms, chatting with Alicia Deal, Title 1 and Computer Lab coordinator, and Reading Specialist Mary Hess. Math and literacy/reading are both areas targeted in NCLB.

Davis said he enjoyed seeing Roosevelt's success firsthand.

"You can see the excitement here (at Roosevelt)," Davis said. "I actually serve on the Education and Labor Committee, which is involved in the No Child Left Behind reauthorization this year. I want to find out what works and what doesn't work. The things that are working and moving children forward, we need to keep those."
