MSHA Cancer Center earns accreditation
Baker Donelson law firm recognized
JOHNSON CITY - For the sixth consecutive year, a national independent health care firm has recognized Johnson City Medical Center as one of the top heart hospitals in the country. According to the 2006 Circulatory 200 Report from the Data Advantage Corp. released this month, JCMC is ranked 90th in the nation in volumes for cardiac procedures. In 2005, JCMC was ranked 97th. The Johnson City-based hospital ranked higher than any other facility in the region. While no other facility in the region made the top 200, the next closest Tri-Cities facility to receive a ranking was a Kingsport-based hospital, Holston Valley Medical Center, listed at 239th. "What this means is we're doing more successful heart procedures than anyone else in East Tennessee, including any facility in Knoxville or Chattanooga," said Cindy Salyer, Mountain States Health Alliance vice president of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Services. "These results tell us the physicians and residents of the region know JCMC is the best facility in the region to offer them heart care, and they are showing their confidence by choosing our hospital more often." The Center for Cardiovascular Health opened at JCMC in 2004, JCMC became the first hospital in the region to make the Solucient Top 100 Heart Hospital list, where it was listed as a top hospital in the nation and the only one in Tennessee for facilities serving as teaching hospitals with a cardiovascular residency program. In 2006 JCMC was named a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care by Blue Cross Blue Shield and is the only such hospital in the Tri-Cities region.
JOHNSON CITY - The Regional Cancer Center at Johnson City Medical Center has earned a three-year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The award focuses on quality, reflecting the Cancer Center's "quality care close to home." Mark Serago, MSHA assistant vice president of Oncology Services, said there are nine classifications in which accreditation may be granted. "We achieved the accreditation in the teaching hospital cancer program, which is in conjunction with the Quillen College of Medicine. The Regional Cancer Center at JCMC is the only center that has been recognized at this level of achievement in our region. And we received a commendation, the highest level a cancer program can achieve," Serago said. Two additional quality measures have recently been achieved by the Regional Cancer Center at JCMC: The Cancer Center is part of the Governor's Quality Award and the Quality Award winner named by the American Cancer Society. The Regional Cancer Center program has one of only five St. Jude Regional Affiliate clinics in the country, and it is the only regional cancer program affiliated with Vanderbilt, Harvard and Massachusetts General hospitals. Serago said the Cancer Center has a long history of accreditation. "The first time it was accredited was in 1947, and it is the first Cancer Center in the region to achieve accreditation."
