GRAY - An early morning fire destroyed a church building in Gray Friday.
Firefighters from the Gray Volunteer Fire Department were called out to Holston Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 136 Bob Jobe Road, Gray, shortly after 6 a.m.
"Upon first arrival we found the structure fully involved," said Gray VFD Chief David Hawkins. "We actually had a pretty good stop on it, but it was pretty much a total loss still."
The fire was spotted by motorists passing by on the nearby Interstate 26, Hawkins said.
It destroyed the church's "double-wide office building," which sat apart from the church and was used for Sunday school classes and fellowship groups, according to authorities.
"At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown," Hawkins said, adding that he and church staff would be back out at the scene today to continue investigating the blaze.
The church's minister, the Rev. Christine Riley, said church members would spend much of today cleaning up the mess left behind by the fire.
More than a dozen volunteer firefighters, from both the Gray and Sulphur Springs fire departments, responded to the scene Friday morning.
No one was in the structure when the fire broke out, and no one was injured while fighting the blaze, authorities said.
