Tri-Cities dart group claims state title

February 15th, 2007 12:54 am by Pat Kenney

For the second time in the past seven years the Greater Tri-Cities Darting Association (GTCDA) has brought home a state championship.

On Saturday, Feb. 10, the GTCDA team of Tracy Rafalowski, Timmy Walker, Tony White, Don Wiggins and Jerome Light captured the 2007 Tennessee Team Darting Championship in Nashville. And it took overtime to decide the final outcome.

After 10 hours of round-robin competition, the GTCDA team was tied with the host Nashville Darting Association team.

Both teams had won 26 out of a possible 36 games played. The matches consisted of two out of three doubles 501, cricket and a four-man 801.

The playoff to decide the championship came down to a final game of 801. GTCDA jumped out to a comfortable lead and cruised home with the title.

"Beating Nashville on their home board made it that much sweeter," said Rafalowski, the local team's captain.

While the Greater Tri-Cities Darting Association consists of about 200 members, the larger associations like Chattanooga have as many as 1,000 players.

"Considering our size, it's a real feather in our cap to win a state championship in the team competition," Rafalowski said.

Besides bragging rights, GTCDA will host the 2008 Tennessee team championship.

"We're really looking forward to have the other teams in the state come to Tri-Cities next year," Rafalowski said.

The state individual darting championships will be in two weeks in Chattanooga.

The GTCDA has 30 teams that compete on Mondays and Tuesdays in league play.
