Crash with tractor claims life of Lee County woman

February 13th, 2007 6:24 pm by Staff report

JONESVILLE - A Saturday evening collision claimed the life of an elderly Lee County woman.

According to Virginia State Trooper Patrick Flanary, who worked the accident, Charlotte Talley Mashaw, 81, P.O. Box 646, Jonesville, most likely died on impact with a 1987 Long 510 farm tractor driven by Lonus Ray Combs, 28, Route 3, Jonesville.

Flanary said the accident took place at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Mashaw was traveling west on Route 58, near the intersection with Route 656 at Friendship Church, when she ran into the back of the tractor with her 1990 Chevrolet Corsica.

The impact flipped the tractor twice and ejected Combs to the median, leaving him broken ribs and other injuries.

The trooper said Mashaw was driving into the sun and most likely did not see the tractor before the impact, although it did have flashing lights activated.
