Church Hill man charged with abuse of 3-month-old child

February 8th, 2007 11:45 pm by Staff report

ROGERSVILLE - A Church Hill man accused of severely injuring his three-month-old child last May was served with a sealed Hawkins County grand jury indictment Tuesday charging him with two counts of aggravated child abuse.

Anthony Ray Gaines, 23, 1099 Old Union Road, Church Hill, is accused of causing his child's skull to be fractured, brain injuries, a broken right clavicle, and six broken ribs. Attorney General Berkeley Bell said Thursday those injuries were alleged to have taken place at Gaines' church. It was also later determined Gaines had allegedly injured the child seven to 10 days prior to the church incident as well. No other information about the allegations was available.

The indictments were issued by the grand jury last Thursday, and on Tuesday Gaines turned himself in to police in Church Hill. Aggravated child abuse is a Class A felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison for each count.

According to reports, the child survived the injuries but remains in poor health. Gaines is lodged in the Hawkins County Jail on $150,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment in Hawkins County Circuit Court on April 30.
