Appalachian Power hits peak demand

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Appalachian Power and AEP Appalachian Power customers in Kingsport set an unofficial record peak demand of 8,050 megawatts at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures in the teens and single digits across much of the company's service area helped push the electricity consumption past the previous record of 7,386 megawatts set Monday at 8 p.m. Tuesday morning's level marked the fourth record peak set in the past eight days. "These peak demands are driven by very cold temperatures but also reflect a steady growth in consumption of electricity by customers in our Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee service area," said Dana Waldo, Appalachian Power president and chief operating officer. The new company peak will be confirmed next month when additional metering information is available to verify the customer consumption. Appalachian Power supplies power to 1 million customers as Appalachian in Virginia and West Virginia and AEP in Tennessee. It's a unit of American Electric Power, which is one of the largest electric utilities in the United States and has more than 5 million customers in 11 states. American Electric Power owns almost 36,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States. It also owns the largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines that all other U.S. transmission systems combined.
JOHNSON CITY - State of Franklin Savings Bank received notice recently that it has been named one of Tennessee's best employers by Business Tennessee magazine in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management, Tennessee State Council, Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Best Companies Group. The bank was one of 25 companies in the state to receive the designation and the only Tri-Cities-based financial institution to receive the honor. Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Employers in Tennessee. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Tennessee with assistance from ModernThink LLC, which analyzed the data and used its expertise to determine the final rankings.
