JOHNSON CITY - Authorities on Wednesday released the names of the two women killed in a Tuesday afternoon crash but refused to release many other details about the wreck.
It was shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday when Johnson City police were called to the intersection of East Watauga and East Oakland avenues. There, a 1991 Plymouth Voyager traveling east on East Watauga Avenue had collided with a 1996 Ford Contour.
The driver of the Contour, Valarie R. Mitchell, 22, and a passenger in the car, Ethel A. Cox, 42, both of 1300 Clearview Drive, No. 4, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Several individuals from the Voyager were transported via ambulance to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment. Individuals from the van who were taken to the hospital included the driver, Patsy J. Cole, 18, and 11-month-old Damien Cole, both of 314 S. Broadway St.
Passengers Israel Brown, 20, 1901 Knob Creek Road, and Michelle Campbell, 18, also of the Broadway Street residence, were transported to JCMC as well.
On Wednesday, police continued to keep mum about the cause of the late-afternoon crash but did say charges were pending in the incident.
The Johnson City Police Department's Traffic Homicide Team is conducting an investigation into the crash, which shut down the intersection for several hours Tuesday due to downed power lines.
Tuesday's wreck marked the first fatal traffic crash of 2007 in Johnson City.
