DUFFIELD - A Wise County man died Saturday morning after suffering a seizure at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield.
Kevin Stallard, 38, had just finished breakfast Saturday morning. As an officer made rounds at 7:40 a.m., he was called to Stallard's cell, where inmates said Stallard appeared to be having a seizure.
"Officers started administering CPR, and Stallard was transported to Lonesome Pine Hospital (in Big Stone Gap)," said Maj. George Hembree with the jail.
Stallard was declared dead by Dr. James Morgan at 8:36 a.m., Hembree said.
Stallard had been sentenced to three years in jail on a charge of probation violation. He was booked into the jail Oct. 31.
Stallard was interviewed by medical staff at the jail before being given a cell. His medical files are confidential, but jail policy dictates that if he had concerns about his health, Stallard could speak with a doctor who comes to the jail once a week to follow up on inmates' medical concerns, Hembree said.
From that point, it is the doctor's decision whether to refer an inmate for specialized medical treatment, Hembree said.
