New congressman Davis receives committee assignments

January 11th, 2007 8:27 pm by Hank Hayes

New Northeast Tennessee congressman David Davis will sit on the Education and Labor, Homeland Security, and Small Business committees in the 110th Congress.

"It is an honor to represent the 1st District on these important committees," Davis, R-Johnson City, said in a prepared release. "These committee assignments are a unique opportunity to move our region and our country forward."

The Education and Labor Committee covers a variety of issues including childhood education, K-12, higher education, adult education, retirement issues, worker rights, worker safety, and wages and benefits.

"Education at each level is truly the foundation for growth in our economy in Northeast Tennessee," Davis said.

The Homeland Security Committee's jurisdiction includes border security, critical infrastructure protection and emergency preparedness.

"Now, more than ever, we need to be vigilant in our security policies," Davis said.

The Small Business Committee handles legislation regarding taxes, insurance and regulation on small businesses. Davis has been a small business owner in the health care industry.

U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, Republican leader of the House Small Business Committee, said Davis' small business experience will make him a valuable committee member.

"I'm looking forward to working with him to promote policies that will encourage economic growth and foster an environment where entrepreneurs and their employees can prosper," Chabot said of Davis.

Davis is the only freshman Republican lawmaker to receive a waiver to sit on three committees, Davis' office said in the release.
