ABINGDON - Virginia Tech will implement a master's degree in education with a reading specialist endorsement at the Virginia Tech Southwest Center located in the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, beginning Jan. 16. The reading specialist program at Virginia Tech is a master's degree in education that prepares experienced teachers to earn endorsement in the commonwealth of Virginia as reading specialists. This K-12 endorsement enables successful candidates to take positions in schools across the state. The program has received national recognition from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the International Reading Association. Any teacher with licensure in the state of Virginia grades K-12 is eligible to apply for the program. Students may begin the program in January and apply for full admission during the spring semester. JOHNSON CITY - The Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology will hold an open house from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday in the former Johnson City Eye Clinic building, 222 E. Unaka Ave. The Johnson City Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting for the new business at 10 a.m. that morning. The Jenny Lea Academy offers training in aesthetics and cosmetology, providing an education for those seeking employment in the skin care spa, medical spa and cosmetology fields. The Johnson City school is currently seeking national accreditation after receiving a perfect score of 100 from the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology. The Jenny Lea Academy is working with Universal Companies in Abingdon, a distributor of products to spas. Jenny Lea Academy was founded in 1981 in Harlan, Ky., and later expanded in Whitesburg, Ky. Both schools in Kentucky have national accreditation, and students are eligible for federal financial aid.
