KINGSPORT — An 18-year-old Kingsport man has been arrested after allegedly driving 100 mph on Industry Drive then 75 mph in a 30 mph zone before stopping for police.

The man claimed he saw police lights and became “scared and did not know what to do” because he had no driver’s license, according to a Kingsport Police Department incident report.

According to the report, at 1:16 a.m. Monday an officer observed a 2002 Toyota RAV4 traveling at a high rate of speed on eastbound Industry Drive. The officer said he activated his emergency lights and siren, but the vehicle continued to the intersection of South Wilcox Drive, where it ran a red light.

The report states the vehicle continued north on Wilcox Drive, traveling 75 mph in a 30 mph zone. It then turned right onto East Sevier Avenue and stopped.

The driver, identified as Andrew C. Witt, 18, 147 Beartown Road, Kingsport, was ordered out of his vehicle and arrested. He allegedly admitted to driving about 100 mph when initially spotted by police on Industry Drive.

“Witt advised he had seen my emergency lights but did not stop because he was scared and did not know what to do,” states the police report. “Witt also said he did not stop because he does not have a driver’s license.”

Witt was charged with evading arrest, speeding, driving on a suspended license and running a red light.
