If you haven't already seen it already, keep a weather eye out for the blast e-mails that shows President Obama standing with his hands clasped in front of him while military officers salute and civilians have their hands over their heart.
The "this is an outrage e-mail" claims the photo was taken during the playing of the national anthem at Arlington National Cemetary on Veterans Day. It wasn't.
In fact, the picture was taken during the playing of "Hail To The Chief" at a Memorial Day ceremony at the national cemetary as the officers and civilians with their hands over their heats were saluting the commander in chief.
Read the full fact check on this political dirty trick photo and see the photo at FactCeck Web site.

who gives a crap?! is the president not allowed to be human?
this reminds me of being at school when the pledge of allegiance comes on. do you know how many times i've had kids do the pledge alone because they decided to remain seated or do whatever they were doing during it?
on the other hand, i've been turning in attendance or doing the lunch count and not even realized that the pledge was on even though 20 people behind me are doing it and it's on a loudspeaker.
! i could imagine what someone who walked into the room would think..."oh my gosh, she isn't reciting the pledge. how disrespectful!" i'm just lucky that i'm not the president and nobody is there to take pictures when it happens.
little do they know that i take it very seriously, but i'm human!
Oliver,
Somewhere above you made the statement that you wouldn't argue about this story and then proceed to do just that. The fact is that, you, the other folks and i only have the facts that are given to us by the media, and believe whichever media channel we prefer. they don't have the all facts either in my opinion. right as well as the left wing media spin the facts according to their opinions. especially msnbc.
Bravo. Tired of crazy tin-foil hat emails from right wingers that claim he's some Muslim plant.
Same people that think NASA faked the moon landing and that Area 51 is chock full of alien bodies.
Don't know where you got your gold star, but you might remember that the President is Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. That title probably comes with the qualifications needed to salute, don't you think?
Can someone tell me if a civilian is even allowed to salute? I understand that Obama has no military background and therefore shouldn't salute. Regardless if he is president or not, could it be that he is not saluting because of that "rule"? Maybe he should be making a habit of putting his hand over his heart, but if he isn't technically supposed to be saluting in the first place, why all the fuss?
Keep letting the media tell you what to be angery at and when to overreact.
Keep letting other decide what is right for Americans. Slaves !
Well said, sir. You have made your points without saying anything degrading or demeaning and proved me and everyone else wrong. Now aren't you special?
The things you say about me are true - I am a poor pathetic victim of the world around me. That's what these comments are about. Me. We all know that if we can quash Mr. Douglas - or
Ollie or Oliver or The Victim - all else will be fine and your world will not be upset.
Yes. I do tend to stray from the subject, as do all the people who comment here. Yes, people who are stupid - deliberately stupid - annoy me no end. Yes. I'm opinionated. So are you.
And by the way, there are those who do agree with my assessments. You and your ilk, on the other hand, disagree with anything I say. You see my name at the end of the comment and you assume it must be wrong.
You people are grasping at straws with the failure to salute deal. As I've stated before, no one has questioned the people who are truly criminals because they wore their little flag pins and saluted and named Jesus and God as their mentors and muses, while robbing the country blind and committing crimes against our Constitution, which, by the way, is "only a G--d---ed piece of paper," according to the one who shredded it.
Big ol' run-on sentence. If symbolism is all you care about, then yes, AS I ADMITTED BEFORE BUT YOU CHOSE TO IGNORE, Obama might very well not salute or put his hand over his heart when the anthem is played.
Even though I spent a few years in the military, I don't always salute either. So I guess I'm unpatriotic. Fact is, the flag pins and the salutes can be as fake as the flags waving at the homes of members of the KKK.
You are correct. I am a liberal. I am sometimes - usually, according to you - wrong. Fine. Get on with your simple life and I'll go back to my more complicated one, where there is reason and logic and people are interested in important and life-changing events, and not symbolic empty gestures.
Oliver, go back and read through the comments, please. You began by insinuating that the first couple of commenters were ignorant and uneducated because they believed an e-mail that stated that Obama did not salute during the national anthem. You then got on your high horse and posted that the reason he was not saluting in the picture was because they were playing Hail to the Chief, "when "Hail to the Chief" is playing, the president does not salute himself. Others salute him. SHEESH" were your exact words.
Follow closely here, I then presented factual evidence that the President's own spokesman admitted that he does not salute the flag every time the national anthem is played (also from Fact check websites). That was the original argument and with FACTS, I proved that he does not salute the flag which is the entire basis of the e-mail that is circulating. Even though this particular photo was taken during "Hail to the Chief", FACT IS.. are you still following... that the President admittedly does not always salute during the National Anthem. (It must be really hard for him to get that hand all the way to his chest and show respect for our nation and our flag).
Yes, Life is simple in my world; when someone admits something or it is proven; I believe it... pretty simple huh??
You are the one Mr. Douglas that made snide comments about the intelligence of others, were proven wrong, and your only response is "you're an idiot and a racist". If you were half as intellectual as you think you are, people might actually begin respecting you and your comments.... but I doubt it.
And those violins you are hearing, they are playing for you and the sad pathetic life you lead as a victim of society....
Oh, and keep playing the role of "victim", you play it well!!
"What we need is a more educated and coherent citizenry. Starting with the state of Tennessee."
Completely agree!
Since Reagan, we have been told that government is always our problem. Its never the uneducated, low wage, conspiracy-gullible, fat people out there casting ballots. They never are the problem.
Anything that disagrees with you and Fox is liberal. That about sum it up for you?
FactCheck is liberal? That would mean, then, that if you check facts on that web site about any perceived liberal, the facts would come back in your favor, and checking facts about conservatives would come back with information against the conservative.
That's not how it works. Furthermore, urban legends web site and snopes.com also come back with the same information, and now you'd like to say they are liberal web sites as well?
Isn't that convenient? Anything you disagree with is automatically liberal and thus lies. Anything that agrees with your assessment is conservative and thus true.
Wow. Life must be simple in your world.
As for your belief that anyone who salutes the flag is automatically a patriot and a good 'Murkin: hogwash!
As I stated before, you can have people like the shooter at Fort Hood who was required to salute the flag and no doubt he did at every opportunity. Would you agree that he's a good patriot? What about McVeigh? Is he a good 'Murkin because he saluted the flag (not saying he did or didn't - just asking)?
What about GWB and Cheney? They saluted and yet they were guilty of crimes against the Constitution. Were they better than Obama?
You may call me names and try to marginalize my opinions at every turn, but that would be because you have no facts to back up your claims, and even when faced with the facts (the picture in question was of an event at an earlier date, and the saluting was being done to the office of the president as the "Hail to the Chief" song was being played), you don't care.
In your simple world, Obama didn't salute the flag at some points, and therefore he should be flogged and stripped of his presidency. Right?
Otherwise, what is your point? The story we are commenting on is about a specific picture, and the allegation is that he refused to salute the flag even though everyone around him was doing so. That was proven to be wrong, but you ain't satisfied. You want to bring up stuff that happened during the campaign.
As those who comment here are so fond of saying, "stick with the subject at hand."
Face it: you will never agree with me because in your mind I've made myself a "victim" because one of the other people who comment here has attached that moniker to me. There is no evidence to back up that claim, and none to back up any of the other claims about my victimhood or anything else you've said about me.
But if you can make it look as though I have no valid points to make - by your snide remarks, by your put-downs, by your nasty habit of calling me names - you will have won the debate?
How strange life must be in your simple world. I cannot even imagine it. You have to swallow a lot of incredible garbage to get to your point of being a truly dedicated conservative.
And you choose to ignore the fact that for years, I was a Republican. That is, until I got a clue. Maybe one day you, too, will get a clue. I don't think so, though, because you cannot get a clue if your mind is closed and locked tight.
Too bad for you. Seems like you are the one who cannot get past the victimization of a president you didn't want and now want rid of. Yet the rest of us put up with years of the previous administration and we survived (barely!), so no doubt you will too.
I can hear the violins playing a dirge just for you and those of your ilk.
This is what I posted earlier: "It was cool to speak out against Bush. The media has made it "Taboo" to speak out against Obama. If you disagree with him or his agenda, you are labeled as uneducated or a RACIST by the left."
Here is a snipbit of Oliver's response: "If Mr. Obama was a nice white guy, it wouldn't make a damn to you if he saluted or not. Simple. End of story.
Go ahead. Deny it. Every time you do you merely make it clearer that's the secret behind the hatred. You people didn't believe a black guy could ever be elected, and you've been mad as hell ever since he was, and you'll do anything you can think of to undermine his work."
I don't think I need to say anything. This man is so intellectually lacking, all he can do to defend his positions are to call those that disagree with him a racist. Instead of responding to my original post in where the President's own spokesman admitted he did not salute the flag during the national anthem, he "reposts" the same comment he ripped off of some left wing web-site about the reason he wasn't saluting is because they were playing "Hail to the Chief". Again, I wouldn't expect anything less from the delicate "genius" Oliver Douglas....
The article states that e-mails are sending out lies about Obama not saluting during the National Anthem. According to Obama's OWN SPOKESMAN "sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't". What is so hard to decipher here? It is in plain text for anyone that would like to do some actual research. Whether you think it is a big deal or not, does not matter. He does not salute a lot of times during the National Anthem....PERIOD... END OF STORY! When the President's own spokesman admits he doesn't salute during the national anthem, and you still choose not to believe it, you my friends are the "sheep" buying into the "spin" by the liberal media.....
How far back do y'all want to take the country? Just to the 50's, when women were sweethearts and were kept barefoot and pregnant, leading lives of quiet desperation? Or to the era when black people "knew their place" and dared not come out of it for fear of lynching for "looking at white women?"
Or just to the last Republican administration? You know? When the president was a good ol' boy who called the president of Russia Pooty Poot?
That far enough back for you? When Republicans ruled the country, and all was right with your world? When it was acceptable for the president and VP to make secret deals with unsavory crooked corporations, and to make illegal wars for profit? At taxpayers' expense?
That far enough back for you? Actually, you proved my point quite nicely so, along with Ms. Peck (whose judgment is impeccable) I don't intend to argue with fools either, lest someone not be able to see the difference.
Mr. Douglas, I couldn't agree with you more as far as what this country needs. And with the nice white guy bit.
My father, who was in the Air Force, used to say that it takes a fool to argue with a fool. I will not argue with you, Sweetie. I do thank you, as well as Mr. Christian, and any other military personnell, for your service to our country.
What we need is a more educated and coherent citizenry. Starting with the state of Tennessee. And getting rid of the brainwashing of the "church." THAT is what this country needs.
What's truly disgusting is having ignorant people believing everything except the truth. Even in the above article, the truth about the picture and the stupid lies surrounding it are spelled out, but you still choose to believe the wrong thing.
Symbols mean more to you than real character. That is obvious from your undying love of anything and anyone republican. In your own narrow mind, if he wore the idiotic flag pin, saluted when you thought he should, put his hand over his heart when you thought he should, and bent over backward to do what you think he should - you'd think he's acceptable?
PLEASE! Don't lie. That's not the problem. Who knows if the eternally phony GWB wore a flag pin or saluted or placed his hand over the place where his heart would be if he had one. No one knows and no one cares.
He's a nice white guy. He doesn't have to prove anything. He was born in the USA. He didn't have to prove it. Just like John McCain - you know? The candidate who WAS BORN IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY? But he's a nice white guy so it don't matter to you boys.
You all are so transparent you must be made of glass. You can deny it and put lipstick on it and smooch it and call it something else - anything else - but we know what it is, even if you won't admit it.
If Mr. Obama was a nice white guy, it wouldn't make a damn to you if he saluted or not. Simple. End of story.
Go ahead. Deny it. Every time you do you merely make it clearer that's the secret behind the hatred. You people didn't believe a black guy could ever be elected, and you've been mad as hell ever since he was, and you'll do anything you can think of to undermine his work.
You wouldn't recognize a socialist if you stepped on one barefoot. You all think that socialism, nazism, fascism and communism are all the same!!!!!
I think it's too late for you to try to remove your head from your posterior. I think it's permanent.
Pity.
Sweetie, you assume that with failure, anarchy and/or irreparable damage are not a result. I hear the critics damning and destroying, but I see very few coming up with solutions.
ONE. MORE. TIME. The picture in the story was NOT. NOT. NOT. a picture of Obama during the playing of the national anthem or the saluting of the flag.
Try. TRY. TRY to read the entire story and realize it's a picture of Obama just coming up on stage and the song they were playing was "Hail to the Chief."
Read this, if you can (I seriously doubt it, but hope springs eternal) from the complete story:
"Anyone who saw news coverage of Obama on Veterans Day might have smelled a rat right away: HE DIDN'T WEAR A READ TIE THAT DAY, AS HE DOES IN THE PICTURE, BUT A BLUE ONE, AND HE WORE A WINTER COAT OVER HIS SUIT."
"(We’ve seen some e-mails claiming that the picture is from the Ft. Hood memorial service. Obama did wear a red tie that day, but the memorial took place at Ft. Hood, against a backdrop of multiple flags including a prominent Air Force flag.)"
"In fact, THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN SEVERAL MONTHS EARLIER, at a Memorial Day observation at Arlington National Cemetery."
"And that’s only the beginning of what’s wrong with this picture. One of the chain e-mails attached to it reads in part: "I don’t know whether the National Anthem is being played, or the Flag is going by, or WHAT, but EVERYBODY in the picture is either saluting or has his hand over the HEART."
In fact, C-SPAN footage from the event shows that THIS PHOTO WAS SNAPPED JUST AFTER OBAMA TOOK THE STATE (AROUND 11:16 ON THE VIDEO) — 'HAIL TO THE CHIEF' WAS PLAYING - NOT THE NATIONAL ANTHEM."
(For those of you who refuse to know anything that you didn't hear on Fox, when "Hail to the Chief" is playing, the president does not salute himself. Others salute him. SHEESH!)
"The others on the podium aren’t saluting veterans or the nation; they’re saluting the commander in chief."
Read, people. READ. Get your heads out of your posteriors and READ. If you don't even realize you're making fools of yourselves, I'm here to point it out to you if you need me to.
I agree with Ms. Peck. Furthermore, as someone who could not stand the Bush policies, I never wanted President Bush to fail. That's like hoping your football team loses because you don't like the quarterback. I wanted our country to succeed and prosper despite my dislike for Bush.
To hope Obama fails is wanting our country to fall further into an economic abyss and to become more and more like a third world country. Anyone who wishes for our leader to fail (no matter what their party) is someone who is unAmerican and unpatriotic.
In our country's history, there have been those called "socialists" and "commies" before, but they fought hard and suffered for what they believed in. Thanks to them, we have things like child labor laws and a minimum wage and an 8-hour work day. Those who stand up and refuse to be a lap dog to the corporate machine are heroes, not commies, nazis or socialists as said machine (Mr. Murdoch) would have you believe.
You are correct Mr. Swortz, those that opposed Bush, I called justified. The complaints against him were legitimate. Although I still can't believe he was never impeached, I always hoped that he would somehow start to do something right. I rooted FOR him because he was my President, and never once took pride or reveled in his failures.
There are those who seem to have an irrational hatred, a deep, personal hatred for Obama. They deny any progress completely and focus instead on bringing every negative, miniscule detail to light. If there's nothing to hate, then they just make stuff up. We all know what motivates this.
There are legitimate reasons to disapprove of the actions of any leader. There are legitimate complaints against Obama's policies or his opinions on here all the time. I'm not talking about those. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But, the other type of attacks based on irrational fear and hate and lies- I will defend him every time, as I would defend anyone else against such attacks.
Can you see the difference Mr. Swortz?
my point was you want to bicker over trivial matters. it's like when people want to get on other folk's case about not having an american flag lapel pin. WHO CARES?????? They went from a symbol of solidarity to damn near a uniform requirement if you want to be in the public eye. And if you don't wear one you hate america and there will be a chain email with pictures of you not wearing your pin to prove it. It's ridiculous. But that's the stuff people want to bicker about. Or send emails about. Not where our country is headed or what can we do to make ourselves heard, instead let's question if the president is a secret anti american who refuses to salute our flag. Let's listen to glenn beck go on about how promoting volunteerism on television is socialistic and wrong because obama asks people to volunteer. I never thought I'd see someone rail against volunteering in your community when so many are hurting, but there's a first time for everything. It's come to the point where such inconsequential items are turned into major arguments. We are wasting our time on these worthless items. But if that's what gets you through the day by all means. You keep rearranging the deck chairs, I'm finding a life boat.
Mr Swotz,
So now we are criminalizing the citizenry for their body language response to the national anthem? What is this? Germany?
I say let the man make his own decision on how he wants to respond. Its the same latitude I would expect bestowed to me, and that I would bestow upon you.
Find a more important issue to twist your panties over.
As a former Republican, watching the party degenerate into Tea Party madness is like watching your family members join a cult and shave their heads. What used to be a party of reason and caution is now the party of radical faith in abstract theologies, free from any empirical evidence, cut loose from the moorings of responsibility and motivated mostly by ethnic and class rage hidden under phony patriotism and populism.
President Obama is an American Citizen by the fact that his mother was an American Citizen. I do believe, however, that he was born overseas and because of the laws at the time was not eligible to be President of the United States. However, no person in the United States has the legal standing to challenge whether or not he is eligible and get anything done about it. It is one of those things where you have to admit you were out maneuvered and carry on. It is not a crime to not salute the flag during the playing of the national anthem. It is also not a crime to not put one's hand over one's heart during the playing of the national anthem. To make it a crime would be making our country into a Nazi state. And that is totally unacceptable. Sometimes I put my hand over my heart and sometimes I don't. I am a retired military man. I believe our men and women died for what the flag and anthem stand for and not the symbol itself. I believe it should be legal for anyone to burn the flag or do with it what they may. The people who died for what it stands for died so people would have that right. I don't agree with everything some one says, but I will defend to the death their right to say it.
Dido Jim. I say call them like you see it.
Quote from Jesco: "but these idiotic chain emails proclaiming obama isn't a citizen, is a closet muslim, will not pledge to the flag, etc. just serves to divide our country further."
I guess it is different since the shoe is on the other foot. Didn't hear any of you speaking out against the anti-war/anti-Bush newspaper articles, news stories, rallies, etc. I guess none of those "divided" our country. It was cool to speak out against Bush. The media has made it "Taboo" to speak out against Obama. If you disagree with him or his agenda, you are labeled as uneducated or a rascist by the left. Just look at the comments everyday on here, or even some on this article.
And it may not be a "big deal" when the leader of our nation does not pledge allegiance or show respect during our national anthem but there are thousands of veterans who fought, bled, and died for this country to whom it means a whole heck of a lot.
Seriously? There are idiots on here that think Obama is muslim? Hasn't that been disproven enough?
I agree, let's treat fire departments as for profit institutions, like health care. As a fireman, I would love to get paid to show up at your house on fire, with you and your family trapped inside, and deem it "not profitable" to risk my life and equipment to save you.
no jim, but i'm sure you labeled every person outspoken against the war during bush's reign as unpatriotic, coward, liberal, etc. the difference here is that conservatives want to nitpick about who's pledging allegiance and who's doing this or that. that is unproductive. it's one thing to be outspoken against an actual issue that faces our country. but these idiotic chain emails proclaiming obama isn't a citizen, is a closet muslim, will not pledge to the flag, etc. just serves to divide our country further. and in the end it doesn't matter one bit. what happens with our economy, the war on terror, etc. matters a great deal.
I'm wondering if all of these pople screaming socialism and entitlements consider police and fire protection to be socialism or an entitlement?
If so, you know there are other contries without any services and where all you own is what you can personally defend. Paying a monthly bills to have guards defending my home or be ready to put out a fire doesn't sound very reasonable to me, but it sounds like some of you would rather have it that way.
If not, what makes you draw the line at health insurance? What's so different about having a basic police/fire service and having a health service?
Quote from Celeste Peck: "It is ironic that so many who accuse him, falsely, of being unamerican are themselves hoping that he fails so that they can be right. To me, those are the ones who are unpatriotic and hate America."
Just wondering Ms. Peck, did you consider those that criticized every move GW Bush made to be unpatriotic and hate America? I would gurantee you wouldn't have called them unpatriotic. Just because we do not bow to "King" Obama doesn't mean we are unpatriotic. On the contrary, most love their country and just hate to see it heading down the road to Socialism.
www.snopes.com is also an excellent website to fact check any rumors flying around out there.
I heard Obama say once, during an interview, that his grandfather taught him to put his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance and to sing the Star Spangled Banner. I was taught the same.
There are photos/videos of him both with and without his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. Regardless, I think it's petty. I am more interested in practicalities than ceremonious gestures. The substance is more important than the display, and so far I am happy to have one with strong character, wisdom, intelligence, and humility back in charge. I will continue to hope and pray that he is a good leader for our country because we so desperately need it right now.
It is ironic that so many who accuse him, falsely, of being unamerican are themselves hoping that he fails so that they can be right. To me, those are the ones who are unpatriotic and hate America.
Good post Ms. Conant.
Maybe you should broaden your lists of websites to those that aren't run by the democratic party, Mr. Douglas.
Title 36 of the U.S. Code, which states the following:
"During a rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is displayed (A) all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;"
"Asked whether Obama normally puts his hand over his heart while listening to the national anthem, Obama spokesman Bill Burton replied by e-mail: "Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't...." (Washington Post)
I didn't say it, an e-mail didn't say it, the President's own spokesman said it. Maybe you should do a little research and reading yourself, Mr. Douglas. Then again you liberals hear something and pick and choose what you want to believe.
For those who choose to not read (one assumes they CAN read, or they wouldn't have found this site), clicking on the "Fact Check" link at the end of this junk story will find these words completely debunking the accusations:
It's amazing the lengths that some will go to to portray President Obama in a negative light. Anyone who, for even a second, would think that he would not cover his heart or salute at Arlington during Veterans Day is the same kind of person that thinks he is not an American and can't legally be President. Shameful!
I want to also state that I have seen the clips of the times when the president did not salute the flag as well. As an American, he should ALWAYS show respect to the flag, national anthem, etc. But just because he is our president, does that mean he has a different set of rules to live by? I see Americans all the time, at ball games, parades, etc. not saluting the flag or showing respect for the national anthem. What is the difference?
OK, I did not vote for President Obama. I am not ashamed of where I stand. However, he is my elected leader. The key word being "elected". I don't agree with how every election turns out but at least I have a vote. That in turn gives me the right to complain. I have seen many shots of the president with his hand over his heart. Of course, I am an educated, civilized, reasonable individual. I still believe certain principals hold true and will not deter. But this nitpicking is ridiculous. We, as a nation, can NEVER have unity as long as people of every color, ethniticity, sex, orientation, etc. continue to actively promote hate.
There were videos and pics of Obama not holding his hand over his heart during the National Anthem before he was elected. As good as the demwits are at rewriting history, they won't be able to rewrite this.
Okay. This is a joke. Right? These two comments cannot be from thinking reasoning logical human beings. Can they?
Now I know what kind of person falls for the e-mails from Nigeria asking for thousands of dollars so the recipient can make several million dollars.
No wonder Tennessee is ranked near the very bottom of the list on education. It's people like these who keep us there!
Whatever you do, don't learn anything.
Don't read. Don't think. Just nod like the Ditto Heads you are so proud to be!
The president is an admitted muslim, he never salutes the AMERICAN flag nor will he recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our nation. He turns away & plays with his crotch while the American Citizens salute the American flag, always being a true muslim. If I were in command in war I would circle my American Troops & tell the muslim to to go back to Africa his beloved homeland he certainly doesn't love America nor respect it. Our Soldiers have no Commander-in-Chief to look up to. Any American respects the blood that has been shed for THE AMERICAN Flag & COUNTRY IT STAND FOR.
Obama never salutes the American flag. Pictures have been hitting the world wide web even before he was elected. I think that he has a crippled right arm that won't rise that high. What other reason would an American citizen have for not placing his right hand over his heart when ever the American flag was waved. Oh, I have issues with this man. More then not only saluting our flag. To many to go into. Surprise, No!
