Unemployment rate tops 10 percent for first time since 1983; 190,000 jobs lost in October

Published November 6th, 2009 | 23 Comments

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The unemployment rate has surpassed 10 percent for the first time since 1983 - and is likely to go higher.

Nearly 16 million people can't find jobs even though the worst recession since the Great Depression has apparently ended. The Labor Department said Friday that the economy shed a net total of 190,000 jobs in October, less than the downwardly revised 219,000 lost in September. August job losses were also revised lower, to 154,000 from 201,000.

But the loss of jobs last month exceeded economists' estimates. It's the 22nd straight month the U.S. economy has shed jobs, the longest on records dating back 70 years.

Counting those who have settled for part-time jobs or stopped looking for work, the unemployment rate would be 17.5 percent, the highest on records dating from 1994.

The jobless rate rose from 9.8 percent in September.

Sullivan County's September jobless rate was 9.2 percent. In Kingsport the September rate was 9.4 percent. The city-county unemployment data for October is scheduled for release on Nov. 25.

Friday's report is the first since the government said last week that the economy grew at a 3.5 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter, the strongest signal yet that the economy is rebounding. But that isn't fast enough to spur rapid hiring, raising the specter of a jobless recovery.

In addition, many economists worry that persistently high unemployment could undermine the recovery by restraining consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the economy.

One sign of how hard it still is to find a job: the number of Americans who have been out of work for six months or longer rose to 5.6 million, a record. They comprise 35.6 percent of the unemployed population, matching a record set last month.

Congress sought to address the impact of long-term unemployment this week by approving legislation extending jobless benefits for the fourth time since the recession began. The bill would add 14 to 20 extra weeks of aid and is intended to prevent almost 2 million recipients from running out of unemployment insurance during the upcoming holiday season. President Barack Obama is expected to quickly sign the legislation.

The employment report showed that job losses remain widespread across many industries. Manufacturers eliminated a net total of 61,000 jobs, the most in four months. Construction shed 62,000 jobs, down slightly from the previous month.

Retailers, the financial sector and leisure and hospitality companies all continued to reduce payrolls.

But temporary employment grew by 33,700 jobs, after losing positions for months. That's a positive sign because employers are likely to add temporary workers before hiring permanent ones.

"How are the Republicans & W responsible for that fiasco?"

The democrats and republicans had every opportunity to listen to the phone calls/faxes/emails/letters sent in... opposing that legislation by 100-1.

If they truly were representatives of the people- that bill would have been buried in Nays. Few people outside the beltway wanted to save the bankers who crapped their own bed.

They voted yes- and W signed it.

So... how can you vote for something, and not be responsible for it?

Stay strong and keep doin' the right thing, Glen. The fact that this is the first year they haven't gave an increase must mean that things are getting pretty bad. I hope the economy really is improving.

Last Halloween, Obama dressed up as a Savior.

This Halloween, He came dressed up as Jimmy Carter.

Jhonny: That economic "recovery" that you're espousing... "How much of the rebound in real GDP was due to the fiscal stimulus, and where do we stand in terms of the effects of stimulus thus far? Although precise answers are impossible at this juncture, several aspects of the report are consistent with our estimates that the fiscal package enacted in mid-February as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) would have accounted for virtually all of the growth reported for the third quarter." [source: http://preview.tinyurl.com/yhzw6bf]

Too long-didn't read version: The economy's "recovery" is simply the stimulus money Obama threw into the mix. Beyond that- the economy is on life support.

Only in your upside-down world would a greater burden upon our deficit (ARRA) be considered a recovery.

Skyrocketing Debt = Recovery
Increasing unemployment = Recovery
Falling dollar value = Recovery
Republicans = Just jealous of Obama's "success".

Laughable.

Urkiddinme,

You conveniently forget that unemployment and interest rates were astronomical before Carter left office. That's why I call King Obama the second coming of Jimmy Carter.

CommentWilbur Rhoton | 11/7/2009 - 10:56 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Jhonny: You've got to be a troll. No one could spout off the tripe that you do and honestly believe it.

"They can deny the economy is getting better all they want. It's common knowlege at this point but it's a tough pill for them to swallow, because it's the man they didn't vote for fixing the problem and having success. They can't stand that."

Archive this statement. The sheer stupidity of it will be evident when the economy continues to worsen. However- just keep listening to the talking heads, Robert Gibbs, and those economists who were caught completely unaware 14 months ago. "But they're saying its getting better, so it must be true!" They were wrong then and they're wrong now.

I'd put my faith in those idiots too, if it was all I knew. I'd rather listen to the ones who saw the flags beforehand and saw the crash coming. Obama continues to surround himself with the former economists who are batting .000 and deluding himself into thinking that he's actually fixing things.

Oh... and the economy affects *all* of us. I'm not masochistic enough to risk losing my job, my home, and my way of life; just to prove that Obama's got it wrong and to throw "pity parties".

Mike: Like living on someone else's dime? *cough* parasite *cough*

Who was the prez in 1983 (the last time unemployment was above 10%)? Oh yeah, it was the right wing hero, Reagan (and this was after he had his economic policies in place for more than two years)...you yellow dog repubs who are so quick to blame Obama for this mess (after only 9+ months) have some explaining to do.

CommentUR Kiddinme | 11/7/2009 - 7:37 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

These repubs only remember stuff when it's convienent, John.

They can deny the economy is getting better all they want. It's common knowlege at this point but it's a tough pill for them to swallow, because it's the man they didn't vote for fixing the problem and having success. They can't stand that.

These repubs actually crave for the economy to get worse, that way they can set back and make pot shot comments and have pity partys about how bad it is, while their job and income is just fine as it always was.

Everyone knows jobs lags behind the economy, but they will deny or spin that too.

Oh Tony and all you other repubs, I guess you forgot who started the stimulus give away. Remember under little bush when Paulsen came running to bush saying the sky is falling and I need $700 BILLION and little bush said anything for you my fellow REPUBLICAN. It seems everyone wants to forget this.

Jhonny Bravo, wake up. Unemployment is at the highest it has been in 26 years. How exactly is that improving?

CommentTony Patrick | 11/6/2009 - 9:26 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Yeah, Jhonny Bravo. Just keep on drinking the koolaid that the obamunnists keep on feeding you. The economy is definitely going up with 10.2% unemployement. It would be laughable if it wasn't so sad. For the masses to accept Communism, the sheep have to remain blind while the economy is destroyed. Then we'll all run to the savior. You people better wake up.

Dear Bravo,

I can't be happy while millions of my fellow Americans can't find work to provide for their families. The blame Bush for everything excuse is getting real old fast and Americans are tired of hearing it. You're embarrassed to admit it, but this George Soros socialist is in way over his head and you know it.

CommentWilbur Rhoton | 11/6/2009 - 5:01 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

If this is fixing the economy I don't want to see breaking it. Wait til everyone cashes in on their "FREE" healthcare! TRILLIONS OF BAJILLIONS OF DOLLARS! Well he'll be gone by 2012 so I'm not stressing!

CommentResqLady B | 11/6/2009 - 2:32 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

whooooooooooo hoooo Tony Patrick...Bravo! Funny, when the economy was going so bad it wasn't inherited from Clinton/Gore it was all Bush but funny I guess the way the economy works has changed since then...NOT

CommentResqLady B | 11/6/2009 - 2:31 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

"It's the 22nd straight month the U.S. economy has shed jobs" Being that Obama has only been in office for 11 months, I think that qualifies as an inherited mess. It's simple math really.

All you haters are going nuts because the economy is improving and you can't stand the thought that the man you didn't vote for is the man with the plan that is fixing the GOP caused problems.

So spin it all you want, but do the math. You're hating it. Tough.

CommentJhonny Bravo | 11/6/2009 - 2:26 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

So much for those "green shoots" that are indicative of a growing economy.

Unemployment is a MUCH more reliable indicator of an economy's health.

No jobs = poor economy, regardless of the shiny happy language out of the White House.

CommentC.K. Bigoldi | 11/6/2009 - 2:03 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

"The worst recession since the Great Depression"?

It's interesting to me how they don't want to call this a depression even though it is one. So instead, now they have redefined the Great Depression to just be a recession itself, since it's obvious we are in one.

This is just the beginning not the end. It won't end until those responsible for engineering it - congressmen and the bankers that pay them - are held accountable for their crimes.

CommentJeremiah Jones | 11/6/2009 - 1:48 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Thanks, Obama!
No, he isn't taking the rap for something that the GOP did, this is not an inherited mess. The new stimulus package, printing new money to cover companies that can't run themselves, printing new money for Cash for Clunkers, pouring tons of money into new Marine 1 helicopters that he doesn't plan on using, refurbishing Air Force 1, this pie-in-the-sky health care plan that is going to cost the taxpayers out the butt, etc..., these things drive the value of the dollar down, and not one of those came from the GOP. Don't try to pass the buck because you elected a President that doesn't understand the way economy works and he is running it into the ground.

CommentTony Patrick | 11/6/2009 - 1:44 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

You should be happy a dem is taking the rap for the mess caused by GOP. So set back and take your pot shot comments while you can.
