After completing the registration form and paying the required fee for an educational display table at the Northeast Tennessee Conference On Social Welfare (TCSW), the booth request was rejected because the educational content was providing resources for the gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgendered (GBLT) community. The conference’s mission statement states: “... dedicated to the mission of improving the social and economic well being of Tennesseans, particularly for those most vulnerable.” Is that not just a bit ironic? The letter explaining the rejection stated that the decision was made because the conference was being held at Colonial Heights Baptist Church, and the church raised issue because GBLT educational resources (such things as resources for suicide prevention, resources for being discriminated against, resources for supportive faith communities, etc.) “do not match their outreach goals.” The church promotes itself on the Web with these words: “... However, there is no way for a computer monitor to accurately reflect the warmth and love of a church whose motto is, The Family Place.” And yet, further irony.
When contacted about this unfortunate event by the TCSW, they were very apologetic and stated that they were initiating a corrective action plan to prevent such discrimination in the future. This is certainly the appropriate thing to do. And I am not badmouthing the two organizations. The TCSW does great work, and I’m sure Colonial Heights Baptist Church has loving members and does try to reach out to others. It’s just a very sad state of affairs that in this day and age we still have such a homophobic and heteronormative climate that propagates bias, prejudice, and discrimination. And that my friends is not ironic. That is simply sad.

Sex is the cause of all those problems, bro.
true, but sex pales in comparison to the trouble that money, religion and thirst for power has caused...sex would be more like a mild headache.
What a bunch of idiots.
Sex is violent. Look how much trouble it's cost us. It's done more bad than good.
Joe says "...I've got an idea. How about let's just all stop having sex?..."
Lol...well, in my opinion, sex is just about the only thing you can do, enjoy (most of the time) and think about and it doesn't cost you any money. It's free! (don't take that away from me!)
Ok, it should be free, unless you are at a point where you have to pay for it! ;)
I've got an idea. How about let's just all stop having sex? That way, noone can bitch about all of this stuff. If humans stop having sex, then the Earth's population would decrease and homos would not have to get picked on anymore. How about it guys? I'm doin' it already. I wouldn't ask anyone else to do something I wouldn't do myself. The apostle Paul said if you're already married, then stay married. If you're not married, then don't get married. If that's the case, noone would have ever got married after he gave that speech. So there. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
"I would love to see these homosexuals be convicted..." You never fail to make me laugh, Wiiiiiilbur.
Sexual preference "conversion" is nothing but a money coffer for self-proclaimed "Christians." The "success" rates claimed by these organizations are nothing but propaganda and outright falsehoods. If there is a true evil on this earth, the predators of Exodus, NARTH, and the many other "faith-based" conversion programs are on the board of directors.
Heterosexuals: Do you believe that you can become homosexual? Could you fall in love with a member of the same sex? No? Then you understand.
Hey Allen, nice little twist on that verse...don't think I've heard that take, but interesting none the less.
I never did understand how that line in the Bible was an admonishment against homosexuality.
If "a man shall not lie with another man as he does with a woman", how in the world is that saying there is something wrong with being gay?
A gay man does not lay with a woman, so this line doesn't even apply.
Obviously, it's saying don't be bisexual.
If, as Ray says, the homophobic climate is "just sad"...
then homophobic climate change must be gay!
Bill says "...A lot of comments I hear (right or wrong ) question a conflict between the theory of evolution and the percentage number of gay people. Why wouldn't, over the course of a million years, a gay gene be about as common as being born albino? If you know, back it up with research. I've heard the question several times..."
Well, could it possibly be that mankind hasn't had enough time to 'evolve' it out of the specie? Anyone know the length of time that science says that man, in his current state, has been walking around on the earth? Maybe if you are around for another million years you will have the answer to that.
Bill says "...It was assumed by many that there would be a gay gene, but none has been found, despite the fact that many activist groups continue to pursue the issue they still produce information that says people are born gay...."
There are plenty of studies that show there is a difference in the brains of gay people verses straight. It may not be conclusive at this moment but there's more to suggest medically that there is a difference between the two, and besides, I'm sure proving that there is a gay gene is not the most important thing on the docket when it comes to research...just depends on whose research you read. Conservative, right wingers say 'no' it's not and usually more liberal, lefties lean to a 'yes'. AND, unless you are gay and have to deal with the issues of being such, the importance of finding the cause is something that alot of people just don't care about.
I know and have met plenty of gay men that are hopelessly gay. Ever seen a pic of a guy whose features are such that there is no doubt that he is gay, even if he was wearing a firefigher's uniform with hatchet in hand? Not only that, but what do you have to say about all the animal species that exhibit gay sexual behavior? Are they possessed of the devil or something?
It is a naturally occuring minority. Always has been.
And besides, as it's been said on other posts, there are hermaphrodites that are born with both male and female parts. They are probably the most confused people around because their genes got screwed up along the way somewhere. They are obviously born that way but people can't seem to grasp that concept that gay people can't be born that way as well?
No doubt there are many people that have gay tendancies because of something that happened in their past, mentally or sexually, but the majority of gay people know that it was no choice of their own.
Bills says "...I have never heard of anyone getting cold sweats and twitching at the thought of being around gay people. Spiders maybe, but not gay people..."
Bill, unless you are gay, and I'm assuming from the tone of your post that you are not, how would you know anything at all about the gay community, or what happens or don't happen amongst them?
I'm here to say that it absolutely happens and it's one of those irritating things that I have to put up when it comes to dealing with straight men. It seems they constantly have to reaffirm that they are not gay, have suspicions about a handshake or a good natured pat on the shoulder and their nervous, uneasy demeaner is obvious to any gay person that has to deal with it. Of course, not every straight man, but enough to realize that it's there with a majority in the area.
It is possible to love the sinner and hate the sin without being a facilitator of the sin. I would love to see these homosexuals be convicted and repent. God's grace is sufficient to save from any sin, including sodomy.
Please bear in mind that the passage where it says homosexuals are to be be put to death was in the Old Testament. It was a specific command given to a specific group of people. It also gave the same penalty to many other sins as well, not just homosexual sins. A Christian today is not commissioned to kill homosexuals or anyone else. Yet homosexuality is still condemned in the New Testament as well. The difference being God will render judgement, not men.
*tracts* I meant in my earlier post.
Early, the Bible says that a man who lies with another man as he does with a woman should be put to death. Just telling you what it says, if you see the Bible as a hate doctrine, you're welcome to, you won't be the only one. Personally I see the Koran as a hate document.
They just didn't want the GBLT agenda spread from within their building. I can understand that. It must be a living hell to feel like you are a man in a womens body or vice-versa to the point that you would go and have surgery to change your gender. Most recently Chastity Bono.
Jeremiah didn't say anything hateful. He merely made a point. With your line of reasoning, Mr. Early, I'm betting that if you asked me if you and your boyfriend could sodomize each other in my yard, and I said "No", that would probably be persecution on my part too.... Right?
I wonder if this group knew the event would be held at the church. Assuming that they did, they would have known the church's position on their lifestyle, and would have known they wouldn't be allowed to hand out pro-homosexuality material at that particular place. Also why would this be necessary I wonder. I'm straight but don't need any special info as such. Why would homosexuals? Just to unite I suppose. I know, as I'm sure they do as well, that there are many other venues that would welcome them to come and distribute their literature. So why purposely agitate a group that they knew didn't support their lifestyle?
I agree with Bill that the term "homophobic" is used far too often. It's not that the church members are afraid of homosexuals; they just disagree with them. I guess that shouldn't be allowed huh? It seems to me that until, on any given day, every small town in the US looks like San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair will the homosexual agenda relent. Or would it even end then? I'm sure that any Christian who wanted to hand out tracks at that event wouldn't be received very well either, and most likely be asked to leave.
Hey Jeremiah good to see you're espousing putting hate doctrine in a church. Staying true to form there. Praise the lord and pass him a copperhead.
Try and take this as constructive criticism guys, so much of the content in your comments sounds blatantly hostile and biggoted I don't think your reaching anyone with your points.
It mostly just sounds like hate.
The term homophobic is decidedly out of date and unfortunate too, everyone realizes some people are gay and people don't really believe it is going to 'rub off'. It was a "neat term" used to deride people who disagreed with the gay community. I have never heard of anyone getting cold sweats and twitching at the thought of being around gay people. Spiders maybe, but not gay people.
The next problem is the widespread misinformation spread by both sides of the issue. One would be represented frequently by gay support groups that hand out information that says in no uncertain terms that people are born gay, (I know what you are going to say, but try and be open about it and go do some research from as many sources as you can before you slam me for it. ) It was assumed by many that there would be a gay gene, but none has been found, despite the fact that many activist groups continue to pursue the issue they still produce information that says people are born gay.
The American Psychological Association says:
"There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay, or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social, and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles; most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation."
A lot of comments I hear (right or wrong ) question a conflict between the theory of evolution and the percentage number of gay people. Why wouldn't, over the course of a million years, a gay gene be about as common as being born albino? If you know, back it up with research. I've heard the question several times.
::grin:: Jeremiah- they can do as they please.
Those who object to the Baptists here, consider the case of a Unitarian church (which is gay friendly) that is hosting a conference and someone wants to set up a table there promoting the idea that gays should be sent to reform camps to be cured. Is it OK if the Unitarian church says they don't want such a table in their church hall?
The Bible's position on men having sex with men is very clear, and a Baptist Church has every right to ban gay promoting groups from using their private resources.
What is not clear to me is what is TCSW? Is it a government agency? A private organization? What is it. Obviously they did not make the right decision in renting a hall from a Baptist Church when a GBLT table would probably have been a reasonable and beneficial component of this conference.
Dearest Wilbur,
The problem is not the lack of investigation, but the churches outlook on people that do not believe the same as they do.
If I were a betting man, I'd bet that if this church were around back when Jesus was here, they wouldn't have helped the woman at the well, who had 5 husbands or Mary Mag for that matter. Or had dinner with the tax collector guy or fed the multitudes - we know they all didn't clammer after Jesus, they just wanted something to eat.
If there is an validity to christianity, far too many christians forget that some of the most memorable actions of christ was reaching out to sinners, period.
being a homosexual is a sin, and sinners are not allowed into church. did none of you get the memo? that is what outreach missions are for. to care for the sinners but keep them away from the clean folks in the sanctuary.
The Bible adamantly states that homosexuality is a sin, a sin great enough for God to destroy two cities in the Old Testament. The church's bylaws also state that they believe that the Bible is God's holy and infaulable word. The problem lies with the church not investigating this organization's intent before they invited them to come.
So, they are now thinking about a corrective action plan??? I doubt it will ever come to light. It's like "do it now and ask for forgiveness later" mentality.
Many people in this area would just as soon have all the gay people just die, or go to another planet so they don't have to go through the pain of actually changing their beliefs or their way of thinking. It can be mentally disruptive and painful to realize that you've been wrong all these years and then make a determination to make it right. It's easier just to stay wrong and hide behind a few verses in that precious black book, the word of god.
Whatever happened to the "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? The churches scream discrimination all the time but they don't have one problem in discriminating against others.
And what's even more sad is that the majority of gay people have no issues at all with rubbing elbows in the straight community...well, we don't really have a choice here in TN, but get a few straight people in a crowd of gays and watch them sweat like pig over a fire pit...as if every gay man is just waiting to pounce on every unsuspecting straight man with the intention of rubbing more than elbows. (sorry for the pun)
I wouldn't be surprised if someone at the Colonial Heights Baptist Church has a gay problem they are hiding. We've seen it time and again that religious leaders erupt with a vengence against the very thing that they are fighting with themselves.
But then, if I felt the need to accept an outreach from someone, the baptist church, or any church for that matter would be the last place on earth I would go.
Most wouldn't admit it, but the reason they do outreach is to get you to start coming to their church. They don't do it simply to be nice. If they did, they wouldn't feel the need to put their label on such activities.
How many times do you hear of a religious charity that doesn't plaster the name of the church all over the place? They are hoping to increase their congregations, tithes and offerings.
When you get out of the religious 'bubble' and see things clearly without the fear of some vengeful god striking you down with cancer or death, you can see right through their motives and actions.
Of course, that is just my humble opinion.
I think that's what their gimmick is, CK. Seems like it's all a satirical joke to me. I think that's what Fred Phelps and WBC is. He's just using the Bible to raise hell. Personally, I think it's hysterical. I dunno, though. Maybe they really are that dumb.
"Heteronormative"? That's a new one for me.
Oh yeah... problem number one: TCSW held their conference at a BAPTIST church.
Didn't that particular red flag fly up, for them? The same denomination that brands innocent stuff like visiting a package store and dancing to be sins against a vengeful God?
"Holier-than-Thou" just oozes from baptist churches, moreso than others.
