Vaccine column based on research

Published November 3rd, 2009 | 0 Comments

Re. Virginia Thompson’s letter Oct. 30, I was well aware that many readers would strongly disagree with my column about flu vaccination. That is why I was especially careful to present this controversial information from sources that the most skeptical of readers would find acceptable such as the CDC, the actual vaccine product inserts and peer reviewed studies published in reputable journals such as the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.

I would be interested in knowing what misinformation Ms. Thompson is referring to in regard to this and any other article I have written. I would be happy to provide Ms. Thompson or any other reader with pertinent resources so that the accuracy of my columns can be verified. Local physicians contact me from time to time requesting additional resource and reference information, and on occasion we have lively and interesting discussions and exchanges.

My credibility is only as good as my research, and I have high standards for the references and resources I use. I have come to my own conclusions regarding my perceived level of benefit versus risk regarding flu and other vaccines. The process of making informed decisions may not be easy or simple, but surely it is better than making those decisions blindly or allowing others to make them for you.

I don’t expect every reader to agree with my opinions, nor is it my intention to convert everyone to my point of view. It is my hope that every person become their own health advocate and be willing to question what may or not be in their best interest. If nothing else, perhaps I have challenged readers to ask more questions. The large number of readers who have contacted me to express appreciation for the article is reassuring.
