Medicare fraud bounty hunters could save U.S. millions of dollars

Published November 2nd, 2009 | 8 Comments

Millions of dollars are being paid for fraudulent Medicare and Medicaid claims. This type of crime has become one of the fastest growing in America with an estimated $60 million spent every year in fraud out of the estimated half a trillion dollars paid out. False claims are being sent in by false pharmacies as well as fake clinics and medical supply companies. Patient lists can be purchased from criminals, stolen from doctors’ offices as well as hospitals. Some don’t even have an office.

I have a relatively simple idea that would help eliminate this type of fraud and save the government millions of dollars. President Obama could form a task force of, for lack of better words, Medicare fraud bounty hunters. This group would not have a set salary but be paid based exclusively on the amount of fraud it identifies and prevents. This would encourage them to go after the perpetrators at a harder, more aggressive pace. This also would be an incentive to encourage them to work harder. Based on the money they eliminate in fraud they would receive a bonus and still save the government millions of dollars. Punishment for the offenders should be swift and severe and not languish in the court system for years, wasting more of the government’s money. Something definitely has to be done soon. The government cannot afford this kind of wasteful spending.

Watch your EOBs for charges being filed for care, medicine, etc., you never received. My mother caught things quite often where a hospital would charge her insurance company for things such as being in ICU for several days when she spent no time at all in ICU. She would always call the insurance company and tell them so they could retrieve their money.

My point is it doesn't matter if you turn someone in, they must try to investigate the person committing the fraud. People who receive government benefits have more protection under the law than the regular people. I was just giving you an example of what happens when you blow the whistle on someone. This is a comment forum Ms Calhoun and sometimes the comments pertain to the subject, maybe not. No, I'm not out there as you so politely said. I'm sorry they butched (butchered) your letter. I guess you don't think Social Security fraud is a waste of taxpayer money. It doesn't matter how many task forces BHO was to create, they have agencies in place now and look how wonderful that works. HIPPA laws will protect those who are committing fraud anyway. Have a great day Ms Calhoun.

To help you along Mr. Hammonds I forgot to mention in my note it was the 60 Minutes show of October 24.

Mr. Hammond what in the world are you talking about. This letter was about Medicare/Medicaid fraud - not social security. You need to go to the CBS site and watch the show from October 24. This will give you more insight into what my letter was about - they butched my letter up and as a result you are really out there. My figures are correct and my letter had nothing to do at all with social security.

Sorry, rechecked the site, only $980 per month. Go to the search box and type in disability planner. Go to the page and click on "other factors ". I guess reporting them to the IRS again would be a waste of time also.

Kpt Girl, I believe you need to check the Social Security site again. You are limited to $985 per month of income before affecting your benefits. It doesn't specify the income has to be from working either. You also have an annual limitation of $13,200 , I believe, for normal Social Security. I do know there is a limitation because my mother receives disability. She is no longer limited because she is over 65 years old. I have been after this for the last 4 years, so I do know something about the subject. I have talked with Davis and Roe's people and both confirm that this individual is committing fraud. I even wrote a letter to the regional manager for the SSA, and he also replied that it was fraud and they would investigate. Two years later and guess what, he is still contiuing on. It just proves you cand commit fraud and get by with it if you watch your step. The only way they will investigate is if you are a big enough fish. As I said, dealing with idiots.

Hey! I like the bounty hunter angle. Maybe they can get someone like Dog the Bounty Hunter to do it and make a reality show out of it.

Gregory, SSDI does not have a limit to resources nor monies received, I believe you are thinking about SSI, which is different. You cannot draw SSI and have any other source of income, you can however draw SSDI and receive money, as long as you do not work, rental income is not work income. You can draw SSDI and own 5 cars if you want to, but SSI you cannot have resources over $2,000 in any given month.

Evidently you haven't turned someone in for fraud, like Social Security. Even with the information, they won't investigate, at least this local office didn't. You also have to dodge the HIPPA laws. If you haven't had this pleasure, you really don't know what you are getting into. All I got was 2 form letters telling me that SSDI was based on need and how much you pay into the system. I understand this, but they should have read the letter and information provided. My complaint was the person was receiving rental income $5-8k per month from property , $1-1.5m, that they had acquired WHILE drawing benefits. They get around $2k in benefits each month, and surpass the monthly income limit set by them. I would love to work and get an extra monthly check. All I can say is, if this is the best our government can do for employees, the taxpayer doesn't stand a fighting chance anymore. I like to call it dealing with idiots.
