We believe these candidates will best serve Va. residents

Published October 31st, 2009 | 1 Comments

In a democracy, every citizen eligible to vote is a public official. Although votes are generally cast for a particular candidate, the economic and social consequences of voting are larger than any one person.

It is important for citizens to fulfill their duties by casting a vote, thereby increasing participation in that democracy. It’s equally important that, to the degree possible, voters inform themselves on the issues and candidates.

It’s our hope that our endorsements will prod readers to think about the choices, inform themselves, and make their own decision.

• Virginia Governor:

Our choice is Bob McDonnell. The competition between Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds has been especially hard fought.

While we believe both candidates of good character and integrity, it is McDonnell’s positions on the important issues that face Virginia which makes him the better choice.

McDonnell has sponsored legislation to eliminate the death tax on family-owned business and farms and has voted more than four dozen times for tax cuts that would have reduced Virginians’ taxes by a cumulative $2 billion. His opponent has voted against elimination of the death tax and for other tax increases and has signaled his willingness to raise gas taxes if elected governor.

McDonnell has sponsored several tort reform bills while his opponent has voted against them. Deeds has also sponsored legislation to triple the medical malpractice cap.

McDonnell has championed Virginia’s right-to-work law; his opponent has voted to weaken that law.

Overall, Bob McDonnell’s stands on these and other issues mark him as someone well suited to helping create the conditions that would allow Virginia’s economy to grow and prosper.

• Virginia Lieutenant Governor:

Our choice is Bill Bolling. Simply put, the best argument for re-electing Bill Bolling is his past performance in that office.

Although Bolling has been endorsed by a long list of organizations from the National Federation of Independent Business to the Police Benevolent Association, his constructive service alongside a governor of the opposite party, Tim Kaine, shows his commitment to the practical over the ideological. A McDonnell-Bolling administration would work even more closely and effectively to reduce the regulatory burden on business and make smart investments in terms of tax credits and other incentives to help jump start Virginia’s economy.

• Virginia Attorney General:

Our choice is Ken Cuccinelli. Ken Cuccinelli is a candidate of diamond-bright intelligence and unquestioned conservative principles and values. A member of the Virginia Senate representing the 37th district in Fairfax County, Cuccinelli has already gained a well deserved reputation for his knowledge of the law and keen powers of discernment.

Its a matter of how you look at it. These candidates will for sure serve the corporate controlled government.....But has far as serving the Va. residents an upholding their oath you can forget it.
