Treat our accidental visitors well

Published October 29th, 2009 | 9 Comments

I hope Kingsport can turn the detour caused by the I-40 rock slide into a positive experience for those who are guided in our direction. I’d like to think the local tourism industry shifted into high gear when it was announced that we could expect up to 24,000 extra vehicles every day for the next three months. Let’s show these weary travelers what this area has to offer, not just what we can take from them. This would be a good time to showcase the many attractions near the I-26/I-81 corridor so those who are passing through might be tempted to stop for more than one night or even make Kingsport their destination on a future trip. We should resist the temptation to see them solely as a temporary windfall for out of state revenue.

Perhaps we could extend them a one-time warning should they run afoul of one of our red-light cameras. Any number of small steps like this can endear them to us, but they can also be turned off just as quickly. How we treat them during their inconvenience will shape their opinions of the area forever. East Tennessee is known the world over as being home to many friendly and generous people, so let’s not do anything to change that perception. Word of a single act of kindness can ripple across the country just as easily as one tale of abuse. With only minimum effort, we could have many new friends in three months. Maybe next time they will take the detour by choice.

Okay, I have lived here all my life and I am curious as to what attractions we have as well. Bays Mountain, the greenbelt, one putt putt course, one bowling alley, 50 walgreens, 50 CVS, many food cities, couple wal marts, a dog park, a baseball stadium. Can you all add to my list? Dont get me wrong, I am happy living here and wont be moving anywhere, but have to say, there is nothing here and not sure why anyone would want to plan a vacation here at all.

When I think of attraction I think of something, someone or someplace that attracts people. Red light and speed enforcement cameras are a definite turn off. This area wants to attract folks that are retired but comments made by law makers concerning the burden that the red light cameras are putting on the older folks prompted the Mayor to suggest slashing the fines . Why not just give a senior citizen discount. You know you could put some coupons in the paper or something. This is a beautiful area to drive through. I have been from one end of Bays Mountain to the other. Seen lots of interesting wildlife, turkeys, bear, and deer. I've been by the Fossil Site lots of times but have not taken the time to visit. But when I think of attracton I think of things that bring people back year after year. Abingdon has the Barter. The Old West Dinner Theater was a fun place to go but it no longer exists. JC Mullins in Tobacco Road was a hoot, really enjoyed it. But it was torn down and is now a storage facility. Freedom Hall used to have lots of good concerts. When I talk to friends they tell me about the neat concerts they go to in Charlotte, Knoxville or Atlanta. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are nice attractions. I own a time share there and it's a good place to go and relax. Driving north on 181 across Bays Mountain is nice till you get on the north side of the mountain and are hit in the senses with the waste treatment facility and the industries. I recently traveled south on 25E across the Clinch Mountain looking toward Morristown/Greenville the pollution haze was greenish yellow and you could tell exactly where the Holston Valley is. And yes you will be ticketed for speeding around exit 19 on I 26 the State of Franklin exit. THP and JC camp out there, even saw a motorcycle cop there friday. Maybe I've just been to too many places over the years and this area just doesn't impress me anymore.

Please turn your attention to the next attraction on our tour. The bright flash you just saw was our in transit photo portrait studio. Your portrait will be delivered to you in approximately 2 weeks and will cost 100.00 dollars. The framing is free. Thank you for visiting our fair region. If you choose to take the more scenic trip through our area , be sure to take advantage of the speedometer accuracy test located in beautiful Mount Carmel. If you have trouble locating the test, just ask the officer parked 200 feet past the test location for assistance. Thank You, have a great visit, and remember that the Tri-Cities is an "All American City"

"Would you elaborate on the many attractions near the I 26/I 81 corridor"

There's the Gray fossil museum, that's pretty cool. And Bays Mountain isn't too far away.

Would you elaborate on the many attractions near the I 26/I 81 corridor. I've lived in this area all my life and I don't know what all they are. Besides most of the 24,000 are tractor trailers and most of them have sleepers. I make my living traveling I 26 81 40 and 75.

Johnson city will take total advantage of this in having the speed traps and pissing off everyone that doesn't notice the speed change and be like every other state in the country and write them tickets because they are out of town and won't contest it cause they were just "passing through". Good Luck with that whole trying to make a good impression after that....

i think JC had something to do with the slide. this detour will really help out their sales tax collections. since few people will be going left on 26 towards kingsport, there is little to attract them over there.

Some in the local tourism industry are already stepping up to draw in the crowd affected by the detour. The Johnson City Chamber is in the process of organizing radio and print ads to showcase local businesses. Kingsport should probably think about doing the same.
