KINGSPORT - A dark sedan slammed into the rear end of a van packed with five small children shortly after noon in an accident that slowed traffic to a crawl on Lynn Garden Drive Saturday.
The children appeared to be unhurt, but three others in the van, including the van’s female driver, were put on stretchers and transported to the hospital.
About a dozen first responders with Sullivan County EMS, Church Hill EMS, the Kingsport Fire Department, the Kingsport Police Department and Kingsport Life Saving Crew rushed to the accident scene located directly in front of the Times-News building.
The driver of the dark sedan, a male, was charged with failure to yield and an insurance violation, according to KPD Officer Matt Stewart. The sedan driver was unhurt and stayed at the accident scene.
Stewart did not release the names of either driver involved in the accident.
Rescue workers severed the middle post connected to the passenger door panel while getting one hurt passenger out of the van.
The children were crying and ushered to the side of the road. One little girl yelled, “I love you, Daddy” while one passenger was placed on a stretcher.
What appeared to be a brand-new girls’ bicycle and a number of fishing reels were salvaged from the van.
Traffic going into Lynn Garden was reduced to one lane as first responders attempted to clear the scene, while vehicles moving toward the Stone Drive intersection were detoured into a shopping center parking lot.
